Title: question thats been asked many times before
Post by: achalsey on April 25, 2010, 04:25:00 AM
So I've got a small amount of dispensable income and am looking for gear because I'm an idiot.   >:D

First off, I"m trying to build a decent rig, I'm thinking 500 (more or less) is the most I'd like to spend on mics, but have a few questions about what would be best to invest in given the situation.

I'll be touring with my cousin's band in small clubs/bars (i.e. bad PA systems) and while I'll basically be a roadie, I'll be recording for fun, (and I'll be using my CA-14's > CA 9100 > R09 also) but I just invested in a UA 5 so therefore want to try a SBD/AUD matrix as often as possible, so am looking for some larger condenser mics.

So, basically, given the budget, if you have free options to tape, what mics would you use (both directionally and placement wise)?

Any thoughts will be much appreciated, thanks.

I think the best gear to get is another recorder so you can tape from the SBD.  As for mics, there are some other threads with suggestions for similar budgets you could check out, but there won't be enough left over after you buy another recorder.  8)

edit: you could consider the SP C4s that someone has for sale on YS: http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=134700.0 (http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=134700.0)

If you are set in your budget then I would suggest the AKG 390 series.   With the influx of chinese made mics at lower price point the 390 series is now overlooked.  You can get active options and relatively cheap capsules for them.

Also su6oxone has a good suggestion of buying a new recorder.   Lots of R4's and the like coming up in the YS.  Four channel boxes right in your price range.   Maybe sell the UA5 to fund a new sets of mics and spend the $500 on a new recorder?
