Topic: Best way to record acoustic guitar and vocals

A friend is playing a club on Saturday night.  He is a singer/song-writer/guitarist.  The room he is playing is usually very quiet and I don't expect a big crowd.  I can plug into the soundboard or I can run microphones.  I've read that close-miking is a great technique for acoustic music.  

Should I use the soundboard patch or the mics?
Where do I place the mics for close-miking?
Do I need one mic for the guitar and another for the vocal?
If I put the mics on stage, won't I be recording the stage monitors?

You might be best with the board feed for this one.

Onstage would likely sound fine too but yes you would get monitors assuming they had some volume and are near your mics.

When micing a guitarist who is singing with two mics can get you into phase problems when you mix the two signals together.

I ran my ADK-TLs in blumlien about 3 feet away from the 2-3 sing song-writers sitting on stage, mics just outside the monitors.  It sounds great.

the phase problem could be fixed by using XY115 or greater, that would cut down on phasing problems, unless you can run a matrix either go that route or just the SBD.  good luck.

I'm refering to micing his guitar and vocals separate. Not a stereo pair in front of him.

So, am I better off with a stereo pair right in front of the performer or plugging into the soundboard?
