Title: Batbox or Preamp ?
Post by: tonebloke on February 11, 2011, 10:29:15 PM
G'day.

A noob question. Is it wiser to go with the batterybox or the Preamp to power the mics ?

Depends on what you're recording.  If you're recording extremely loud music you need very little if any gain so a battery box is fine.  If you are recording anything not really loud you'll need some extra gain and a good preamp is the best way to go.  It will power the mics and give you the gain you need and be quieter than internal gain on your recorder.

Thanks S. Loud shows are the go so I'll get the batbox.

To be ready for anything I'd get a Church Audio or similar preamp.  It will have switchable gain settings so you can set it to no gain and use just to power the mics.  Then  if you do decide to record something quieter you have the opetion of adding some gain.

To be honest; I'm not into "quieter" music and can't see myself going to one of those. But, you never know.
