V3>JB3 users: step inside
« on: June 14, 2004, 01:15:13 AM »
Rumor has it that Grace will be announcing the long awaited optical out mod for the V3 on Mon 6/14.  Folks running a JB3 with the V3 might want to call to get put on the list to have it done.  Price will be $195.  Steep, but very nice not to have to run a converter box.

My digital format converter solution cost me:

$60 | Hosa ODL-312
$30 | 9.6c 3000 mAH NiMH battery + charger (leftover from my UA5)
$ 8 | self-made AES/EBU cable

Not included: optical cable I would need regardless of the solution - DFC or V3 optical mod.

FWIW, a smaller battery + cheaper charger can probably be had for < $20.  The ODL only draws ~50mA max, so the 3000 mAH is kinda overkill.

I got this email form Grace today ;D

Dear Lunatec V3 User:

At one time or another you have contacted us here at Grace Design
regarding an optical output modification for the Lunatec V3.  At that
time we put you on this special email list such that when this option
became available we could contact you directly and you all would be the
first to know.

That day has come!  The Lunatec V3 Optical Output upgrade is now
available.  This service replaces the WORDCLOCK output on the V3 with a
TOSLINK optical format output.  The following sections detail the
specifics of this upgrade procedure as well as all of the logistics.
Please read through them carefully and if you have any questions, do
not
hesitate to contact us.

What does the upgrade package include?
• A new V3 rear panel that replaces the standard Word Clock output with
a TOSLINK optical output
• Complete system testing and performance verification
• New 5 year warranty
• A V3 manual addendum that describes operation with TOSLINK
• New packaging components if required
• Return shipping of your preamp via FedEx ground service paid by Grace
Design

How much does it cost?
The cost of the upgrade to existing V3 owners is $195.  New units with
TOSLINK output will be handled through our dealers as usual.  We do not
accept credit card payments and total must be sent in full via personal
check, cashier’s check or money order with your preamp when it is sent
in.

How do I arrange to get optical upgrade service for my V3?
Because of the high demand for this service, we have implemented a very
simple and strict procedure.  This must be followed such that we can
make the process as efficient as possible for you and us both.  By
following these guidelines you can be assured that your preamp will be
serviced and returned to you in the quickest manner.

The skilled staff here at our Boulder, CO shop will be doing all
upgrades. The upgrade services are being scheduled via appointments on
first come – first serve basis.  We have allocated Tuesday to be the
official upgrade day, which means every week a certain number of V3
optical upgrades will be started on Tuesday.  For the service we are
shooting for a 48 hour turn around period, but we cannot guarantee
this.

To schedule an upgrade appointment, please call Eve @ 303.443.7454
9am-4:00pm M-F.  Before calling, please determine the dates that will
work for your schedule.  As stated previously, all upgrades begin on
Tuesdays this means that units must be received no later than the
previous Monday.  Preamps that do not arrive by Monday, will likely
have
the upgrade process postponed until the following Tuesday.  We will be
scheduling appointments for the entire summer immediately so even if
you
can't send your unit in right now, we recommend you set up your
appointment as soon as possible.

When you call, please have your V3’s serial number handy, as it is
required to set up the appointment.  Eve will provide you with return
details and can handle all scheduling and return questions you may
have.
If you have any technical questions you can contact me directly.

Thank you all for your patience as we worked to make this feature
available.  Hopefully it will prove to be very useful for you all.
Have
a great day!

Or at least an extra n years where n is the standard 5 year warranty - however long since the unit was originally purchased.

Cha-Ching...

It's worth it to have 1 less battery, 1 less box & 1 less cable to worry about PLUS 5 more years on the warranty AND have the unit gone thru/tested/tweaked.

I have my appointment set for the 22nd of June.

Funnier still, I called for my appointment and Michael answered the phone.

Anything interesting to do in the Denver area?  Wife is having surgery, & I'm flying out to spring her from the hospital (June 27th - 30th), help her out and bring her home - but she's going to be pretty much bed-ridden in the hotel, which means "Team Fort Lauderdale" needs to figure out something to do...

Hey to all,

Rick

Oh, twice used Hosa with RatShack 2300 NiMh and charger for sale... ;D

that's a pretty sweet deal.

I'd run that in a second. I've about had it with DAT tapes ::)

probably wrap it up this fall, we'll see though...

I just ordered batteries for the m148 today so it should be good to go for next week.

are you doing any of east coast tour too?

has anyone got their v3 modified and had a chance to run it with a jb3 yet?

There's a thread where one or two people have indicated yes, but I forget which thread exactly.  I sent mine off for modding today and will pick it up next week on my way to Rockygrass.  Gonna bring the Hosa ODL-312 as backup, but hopefully won't need it!   ;D

brian, i'll be very interested to hear how it works for you.  i've been thinking about getting mine modified for awhile but i wanted to make sure i liked the 4022 > v3 combination first.

I got mine done just after the Dead Red Rocks run.  Check this thread for more details and a picture of the new optical out:

I've had a chance to run it now for 6 shows or so.  It has worked great everytime.  I haven't done any bit perfect testing on it, but it has been smooth sailing every time.  Worked perfectly each time and I've noticed no issues with the recording.  My view is that mod V3 (optical out)> Nomad JB3 makes for a very, very nice 16-bit recording package.
