HI!
I am wondering if anyone has exerience with a good stereo preamp w/phantom and batterypower for the sony d50 recorder?
I will be using a pair of AT4051b.

You could use a littlebox, they are highly customizable and a great price.

I looked into it and it seems very good value for price.
Anyone using Audio technica 4051b found a good match i preamp`?

No experience with the LB, but as a D50 owner, that is what I would go with if I was running phantom-powered mics with it.

I was really happy with D50 + SD Mixpre. The Mixpre is really quiet.... I loved it.

I also like my SD MP2 and D50 combo! So much so that I bought another MP2 after selling my first one.

I have both a MixPre (which is basically the same as the MP-2) and a LB. I love them both, but if I was looking for my first pre with phantom power and did not need more than 30 dB or so of gain, I would get the LB and save a lot of money. I don't think one would sound better than the other unless you need more gain than the LB provides.

fmaderjr makes a lot of sense with his post. the mixpre is pretty because of the lights and nice big knobs but there's not much of a chance to use beyond 28-30 dB of gain when recording PA music. I think the mixpre would be great with nature recordists who wanted mics >pre > recorder. Otherwise, the littlebox works great to power phantom mics.

You didn't mention your budget, but Audient Mico has gotten some good reviews:

I don't think anyone here has tried it with the D50 though, to see whether it has the optical signal flag incompatibility issue (which bars UA-5 and other obsolete units from talking with D50).
Otherwise, SD USBPre 2 is just being released, and it should feed a compatible signal. Probably a better deal, smaller than the Mico and more flexible powering.

hey thanks for your input guys! I endedup going for the littlebox w/output transformer switchable. hope its the right choice!
3 weeks from now ill know.

I have to report, unfortunately for me, that the Audient Mico does indeed have the optical signal flag incompatibility issue with my D50.
I'm in contact with Audient but so far there is no fix.
Does anyone know if there is a third party converter that will allow a connection between Pro and consumer S/PIDF?
Thanks,
Phillip

I know that the decision is made, but wanted to share my combo Sd 302 + d50. In 302 led meters have 4 levels and type of reading, limiters are programmable, which makes my D50 never saturate, the monitor matrix of headphones is excellent with MS decoder, a lot of level, and if you feed from XLR's have attenuation of 2 dB, which has no other preamp, I love it!
By the way I want one of that Little boxes!
