maybe I am reading it wrong, but it looks to me like it requres a HW update before you can use the new firmware

nope, thats JUST for external HD recording, the faster firewire speeds and all of the other stuff are still available :)

the FAQ even says so :)

yeah, i cant send mine in til maybe springtime, i have no need for the external HD thing now, but 3 x faster firewire speeds are MUCH welcomed :)

also, id like to see a few bugs hopefully worked out

do they keep downloads of previous versions available? i'd be willing to try this one out for some stuff that will be taped by others as well, but don't want to get stuck with 2.0 if its a bomber

some are out there, all you have to do is change the url for the link to go to the approriate version, about half the ones I tried worked

you have to run the update twice, It works better in the root folder instead of the SOUNDDEV folder, the 2nd update couldn't find the file and I had to move it to the root.  Had to reset bitrate and time/date but all other settings were intact.  I don't know how I had it set previously but it looks like my analog outputs needed to be reconfigured too.

Has anyone received any info from SD on the upgrade process and how long they expect the turnaround to be?  Do you have to send it in or is there a do it yourself option similar to the AD fix? (although I'm not sure I EVER want to deal w/ trying to line the tabs on the case up again).

mitch

you have to send it in

also, you have to get an appointment kinda, call them and set it up to minimize a bunch of folks sending in

i would think turnaround would be minimal

im gonna 2-day or overnight at some point next spring

the new firmware basically just addresses some new changes/bugs and has 3x faster firewire to take advantage of, and when you have time, send it in to take advantage of the external firewire recording

Thanks Bean, found some more detailed info on the process here...

I have a little downtime coming up but may just wait until after the first of the year to send mine in.  I don't really need/plan to mirror, but being able to dump the files to an external drive w/out a laptop would be nice.

i am burning my last few RAW data 24/44.1k files straight from the 722 and updating prolly in a few hrs

then im gonna see just how fast this firewire is ;D

i still have about 30GB on there, i was gonna install the new firmware, transfer a few things, and then reformat the 722 HD and start fresh :)

if you feel like it maybe you can do a transfer of a file before and after and compare the transfer times, i'd be curious how much it actually increases the transfer time

really?  i transferred 11 gigs the other day to my macbook in a little over 50 minutes on 1.74.  maybe it's slower on a pc?

i xfered a 1.85GB file, where the 722 splits at 2GB, and got 1.79 beta to0 do it in about 6mins

2.00 did it in about 6 mins too

so im sure its an improvem, ent from 1.74, but not from 1.79 beta

Got the 744t back w/ the 2.0 hardware yesterday.  I cleared the hd before I sent it in.

I'll play more tomorrow - w/ the 2.0 firmware I transfered a 814 mb file in about 2:20 from the 744t to a mac running OSX 10.4.

That was one mono track @ 24/48 from a ~90 minute set.

The download page has as a "known issue" that the take number resets to 0 on power-down.  Can you end up overwriting files with this?

They said from the day they released 1.79beta that it had the 2.0 firewire speed improvements.

i don't know how the 722 handles files with the same name, but the only time i would see it being an issue is if you power down in between sets or acts on the same day, otherwise it would just have files of the same name in different folders

it just appends A, B, C etc to the end of the file name.  I believe Mitchell did some extensive testing of this as did I.

so thats where the letter comes from, i had a file named 128A and couldn't figure out why it added a letter
