I need a standalone recorder with Digital IN that can do 24/96.
Preferably coaxial SPDIF.
My R-09 doesn't have this.
I've been looking at:
Sony PCM-D50 (optical in, but some say not compatible with all ADC?)
M-audio MTII (this has SPDIF in, seems to be 24/96)
Tascam HD-P2 (firewire seems nice, but Made in China and feels like a toy)
Fostex FR2LE (no Digital Input?)
Any suggestions please?
I basically need bare minimum of features, but I do need the digital input to work properly,
and NOT BE RESAMPLED.

Fostex FR2, but digi-in is AES/EBU not S/PDIF

I have an MT II. Use it as a bit bucket and having no problems. 24/96. Seems to fit your needs. Analog input sucks, so I hear, but, I will never use it.

SD722! Has 40gb drive Built like a tank ProAES and S/pDif with super clock NICE!
tascam hd-p2 More rugged than you think. Mine has held up very well being shippede all over the country
marantz PMD-671 ... Does not have the killer on the fly formating capabilities ( try a non formated or wrongly formated mem card) of the tascam or sd722 but great meters

For the record I do not think the HDP2 feels like a toy.....it may be plastic but it is sturdy....Mine has been very reliable. absolutely no issues.......

i admit, i'm very surprised about the positive comments about the HD-P2.
that's the unit closest to my budget.
though it's 'made in China', i'm even MORE hesitant to go with the MTII.
So, 2 positive comments about the HD-P2.
Sound Devices is too expensive for me.
Fostex unit seems to be similarly priced to Tascam unit, but one is firewire and one is USB 2.0.

Another thumbs up for the HDP2. I have been running mine for about 9 months. It is by far the easiest recorder i have ever used. (D8, laptop, H120, etc)

I've had mine since April '06, and I also give it a very positive recommendation. I'm also using it exactly as you'd be using it, just to record an S/PDIF signal via the coax input.
At this point in time, the only downside to the HD-P2 that I can see is that if you try to record more than 8 GB to a single card, the deck will freeze. (You can use cards larger than 8 GB, and it'll format them just fine. but it'll freeze when you hit 8 GB of recorded files). They are working on a firmware update to allow more than 8 GB of recording per card, but its seems as though it's not a priority for them, so who knows when (or if?) that firmware update will ever come to fruition.
That said, 8GB card are very affordable these days, and that will allow for 4 hours of 24/96 recording per card, which is plenty for me (and I would guess enough for most people).

and if 4 hours isn't enough, you'll get 8 hours running 24/48. more than enough.

also a huge plus for the HDP2 is the ease of powering it. If your in a pinch you can get about 3-5 hours recording SPDIF on regular 8AA's it also takes 12V DC and firewire. It will choose between the best power source on the fly. I find having rechargeables in the AA bay and using a 12V Eco-charge gives me peace of mind and really long record times. You can hot swap the external power if you have the AA's in as well. seemless no glitches etc. For festivals this is really big IMHO

Picked up the HD-P2!!
