So, uhmmmm...apparently simultaneously pressing Input + Menu or Input + HDD mutes channels 1 or 2, respectively.  Wish I'd known this before accidently pressing Input + Menu to turn on P48, instead of the correct ~ + Menu, and then not being able to figure out why the heck my L channel was dead.  Doh!

Brian, RTFM, yes.  But there is also a nefarious plot back at the SD factory about rewriting the manhual with every upgrade of the firmware, just to confuse us.  They are just messing with us.   

And, thanks for the warning.  I don't read the manual that much, either.

Dang.  That is something I would definitely want to be able to disable.  The other gotcha is, if that happened I wouldn't really know how to quickly fix it.  I never used the hotkeys much or bothered to remember them.

I once had a problem where a piece of tape on the face of the 7xx was pressing the tone button and caused damage to a recording.  I hadn't bothered to read about the tone function since it was something I didn't expect to need.  Also, the tone button was still active with everything locked!  SD felt that was a bug but I don't know if they changed it.   Fortunately you can disable it in the menu and I always did.

I actually read the manual, but it was a long time ago.  And, of course, I didn't fully digest those features about which I didn't particularly care -- like muting channels.  Dumb!  Should have studied a bit harder and/or keep a manual with me.  Live & learn...

Yes, same shortcut keys to enable / disable muting channels.

I saw a quick-reference card in one of the manuals. Print that out and tape it to the top of your unit. Actually, it'll probably be more socially acceptable if you tape it to the 722.

No, tape it to your unit and not the 722, because those large aluminum surfaces should be clear to transfer heat.  And while the 722 can take a lot of heat, cooler drive temps should improve longevity.

FWIW - The factory includes a clear plastic envelope that can be attached to the bottom of the 7nn and it holds the cardboard cheat sheet that comes with the new units.  It does not seem that SD considers this being attached is a heat problem.

Again, the 722 can operate at very, very high temps.   It takes the heat just tfine.  But high temps kill drives faster.

It is also a fact that high temps will shorten the life of your lithium batteries.

And high temps could mess with other gear in your bag.  The only time I've ever had an r09 shut down was on a hot day with a v3 and 722 in a somewhat closed bag.  It could have been due to an issue with the NiMH's powering the r09. Fortunately the r09 was just a second rig. The microtrack, with the polylithium battery, is especially sensitive to heat (lookout spoogles!).

I did exactly the same thing at the Asheville WSP show. Tried to turn on phantom and hit the wrong keys. It took several minutes to figure the thing out. I too thought that my left channel had blown out. I was damn happy when I lucked in to the solution. Still don't know how I got it back on.
