AT853 with Battery box + Yamaha C24
« on: July 18, 2010, 06:45:48 AM »
hi guys,
I always used my AT853s with battery box together with R09 or R09HR but I want to try them with my new Yamaha C24 recorder

I've seen that this recorder has a MIC IN / LINE IN switch. I suppose i have to go LINE IN cause my mics are powered by the battery box and they don't need recorder's plugin power, isn't it?

You don't have to go line in if you can turn the plug in power off on the recorder. Even if you can't, you still may hear no audible problems. You'd have to try it both ways & see what works best.

I'm curious why you got the Yamaha when nobody here has talked about it and the much praised M10 is about the same price (If the B&H $200 sale is still on). Let us know how it works out.

I refuse to be an early adopter myself after buying a Zoom H4 before I found out about taperssection and read the reports, but it is always great when someone else takes the plunge and reports back.

I bought Yamaha C24 just because of it's incredible small size and its cheap price (I'm located in EU so US sales are not always a big deal to me...shipping & duties...). Anyway I still have both R09 and R09HR and I use them in 99% of the cases...I just wanted to give the C24 a try cause it's incredibly small and easy to take in pocket

The problem is that I don't know if I can disable plugin power (just like with R09/09HR) cause on the reference manual they say there are 4 settings for EXTERNAL MIC: 1 - Powered Stereo / 2 - Powered Mono / 3 - Dynamic Stereo / 4 - Dynamic Mono

For POWERED mics they report a plugin power of 1.3V...so I assume this is the setting to be used if you want to have plugin power. I still don't know what the DYNAMIC mic setting means

You're fine.  Dynamic mics don't need external power, so the "dynamic stereo" setting would be for a stereo mic with plug in power off. You'd use that when using a battery box to power your mics.

If you want to record Lossless via Line- In you have to try it out with the C24 at a shop first: The reference manual doens´t say clearly if the recording via line in is limited only to Mp3 192 Kbits  :'( (like on it´s precedessor the Pocketrak CX). And the Line in  is not adjustable.

There is also a pocketrak W24 availiable (same chassis as pocketrak CX, also very compact) - but there the ref. manual also says nothing about recording via Line - In is limited to MP3 or not.

What is great if you run that Pocketraks with Eneloop´s they really last very long!

the last gig i have recorded with pocketrak CX i used the internal mic. - sense= 1, stereo setting = wide. but i was also lucky i have catched a good recording spot at the stereo center (Gagarin205 - Athens)

well it's surely able to record in WAV from LINE IN...but you're right, the input level is not adjustable from the recorder if you go LINE IN. You have to manage the level from the source
