722 metering ballistics (idiot check needed)
« on: May 24, 2005, 02:38:59 AM »
I'm getting ready to take my 722 on it's virgin run and I have questions about it's metering functions. Basically, I want the meters to act like a D8 or DA-P1.

Which metering ballistic should I use? I'm thinking peak hold is the ticket, but I don't know for sure.

As much as I hate to admit it, I'm having trouble understanding the entire concept. Help.

If you're trying to get levels similar to a d8/p1, you want "Peak + VU" selected (default setting). Page 22-23 in manual explains the differences.

and don't be afraid to push the levels.  just because you see two red LED's does not mean you are in trouble, as far as i can tell, that's pretty much where you want to be.  i was hitting the last red LED at built to spill last week on occasion, and there is not an audible clip to be found.

Agreed. Just pay attention to the -3 peak/light on the side of the unit and you'll be straight. It's hard for me to differentiate -12, -8, -4 during a show, so I just go for -3.

I ran the unit hot as hell for crowes in asheville, both boswells and my rig and no audible clips anywhere...the -3 on the side was popping up pretty regularly, brief flashes, but pretty regularly and the tapes sound fantastic

i didn't even know what that light was, i was worried for a bit that was the clip indicator.  i was hitting that off and on, now i wish i was pushing a bit more.  no matter, "tape" sounds great.  also, this time i ran the linked gain, which i actually liked a lot after the first song, i was dialed in balance-wise and only had 1 knob to change.

Yea, I like having the gain linked to one knob, with the balance for the other. IMO, it seems way easier to adjust one knob, rather than two at the same time (especially fob or other tight situations). Most people I know that own one are changing theirs to seperate gain control, but to each their own.

am I ready...what kind of question is that :P  absolutely ready...cant freaking wait!

Going to have to keep the drinking to a minimum as I am driving back that night (tough at a truckers show I know), but cant wait regardless!

How big is the deck Kevin?  I am envisioning this as some huge parking lot...if that is the case I am going to try to bring in some chairs to sit on during the openers, and sit the gear on during DBT...
