722 question?
« on: July 01, 2005, 11:13:31 AM »
I read in a FAQ somewhere that when run line-in, adjusting levels on the 722  can create audible artifacts. Is this true? Thanks, Marc.

yeah, the karma bit me in the ass last week, after like 500 shows without a digi spike...and it would have to be the Mule. :P Saw a few at Red Rocks, and the lights are just so cool I gotta have one... ;)

But seriously, accumulating dats seems to be purposeless at this point. I copy them to disc and put them away. Nick, what's the prevailing price with a battery setup?

You know, Marc, for the price of a new 722, you could buy about 15 AD1K's - even if the clocks crap out, they'll last you a looooooooong time.   :P

Nick, what's the prevailing price with a battery setup?

you can get the 6000 maha batts for around $40 each and they will power the unit for ~5 hours, and you can get a dual charger that has both ac and a cigarette lighter adapter for $42...so for around $130 you can have 2 batts, the charger and be able to conquer most shows with that power....oh yeah, and the batts with the charger will weigh less than the 6V SLA charger (and significantly less than the battery :P)

as for the units it is pretty uniform pricing I would guess...drop Frank at Cascade an email he can give you a quote

I believe I sent you the 41>m148>722 24/96 disc from Asheville.  I was all over the levels the first couple of songs before I got comfortable running line in with the 722.  You don't hear any artifacts on that tape...  at least I don't.

I don't..the only *artifacts* I hear are audible track breaks. ::) ;D

Love the sound, definitely expands the soundstage. That tascam dsd looks real interesting, but two things hold me back, 1) can't play the dvd on anything else, and 2) apparently, if you want to make 16 bit discs from the dvd, you have to go analog out from the tascam? That's pretty weak.

In "Line In", the 722 and 744t have stepped gain controls with steps at 0.1dB.  I had some concern that this would be audible in some way, but having run nearly all line-in on my 722, I can say with certainty that it's not an issue at all.  My only complaint about the gain on the 7 series is that it shows the readout in dB on the LCD only while you're making an adjustment or for a split second afterward.

Mention that on the support forum.  I've bitched about that too.  Maybe they will do something about it eventually.   I don't see the need to constantly show the sample/bit rate as the default since that is a fixed value when using any analog input.

BTW, I've never detected any audible wierdness associated with gain adjustments.

soooooo close...the heat issues are bugging me, but probably pull the trigger anyhow. gonna run 4022>m148>722 and ditch any outboard a/d.

I have Claypool 4022 > m148 > 722 if you want to hear the sound.  should have it online be wednesday.

I didn't have any heat issues the whole festival, kept it in the Portabrace bag.
Only issue was battery, swapped it out and was good to go

pull the trigger, always run the 722 in the PB with the front flap, and two side flaps open for maximum ventilation, and you'll be fine :)

no interest in the m-audio marc?  i do realize it'd be an extra adc unit you'd have to run as well, but it seems to me that the cost of the 722 to be run as just an a/d and recorder is pretty steep, unless the 722 a/d is really, really nice.  just curious as to your thoughts really, i need to get another rig soon enough and there are so many options out there these days i change my mind daily...

Much of my thinking is skewed by a severe restriction on what I can carry. My 4022>m148>modsbm1 with only AA's runs about 20 pounds, and that's all I'm allowed to lift. So the only real upgrade I can see is to substitute the 722 for the two M1's and modsbm1 I carry around, should be pretty close to my bag weight right now. so a topnotch 24 bit a/d like the mytek or even adding a mme not really an option for me.

pretty sad, huh? actually, I'm on a lifetime 50lb restriction, but I don't think I'm up to that yet after my last date with the surgeon. when I ran 4011>v2>2k>p1 I must have lugged 65 lbs easy. :P

my motivation is mostly to improve my sound and to go 24 bit...so not too interested in continuing to use the modsbm1. great box for what it is, but no question in my mind that I give up some detail running it behind 4022's. Thanks, Marc.

that's what walt runs but substitute the 140s.   holy crap its heavy.   we got lost last summer at one of the phish shows looking for our car and after about 20 min of walking, he was hating it big time.

i'm hoping to run a m148 comp this weekend and find out that i like the 722 just as much without the m148.   one less thing to carry.

my thought too, though I just don't think I could give up the brick, and I have serious doubts about the 722 measuring up. Like nfw.

I'm interested to hear what you think.  My 722 just came in a couple of days ago and I haven't had a chance to run it yet.  I'm planning on doing the same comp at some point, but I can't imagine letting go of my brick.

fwiw, i ran the 744 in the direct sun at tbf for about 41/2 hours just to see if it would crap out.  no problem, and it was hot up there that week, not a cloud.
