722 question?
« on: July 01, 2005, 11:13:31 AM »
I read in a FAQ somewhere that when run line-in, adjusting levels on the 722  can create audible artifacts. Is this true? Thanks, Marc.

yeah, the karma bit me in the ass last week, after like 500 shows without a digi spike...and it would have to be the Mule. :P Saw a few at Red Rocks, and the lights are just so cool I gotta have one... ;)

But seriously, accumulating dats seems to be purposeless at this point. I copy them to disc and put them away. Nick, what's the prevailing price with a battery setup?

You know, Marc, for the price of a new 722, you could buy about 15 AD1K's - even if the clocks crap out, they'll last you a looooooooong time.   :P

Nick, what's the prevailing price with a battery setup?

you can get the 6000 maha batts for around $40 each and they will power the unit for ~5 hours, and you can get a dual charger that has both ac and a cigarette lighter adapter for $42...so for around $130 you can have 2 batts, the charger and be able to conquer most shows with that power....oh yeah, and the batts with the charger will weigh less than the 6V SLA charger (and significantly less than the battery :P)

as for the units it is pretty uniform pricing I would guess...drop Frank at Cascade an email he can give you a quote

Natelbag-
I believe I sent you the 41>m148>722 24/96 disc from Asheville.  I was all over the levels the first couple of songs before I got comfortable running line in with the 722.  You don't hear any artifacts on that tape...  at least I don't.

I don't..the only *artifacts* I hear are audible track breaks. ::) ;D

Love the sound, definitely expands the soundstage. That tascam dsd looks real interesting, but two things hold me back, 1) can't play the dvd on anything else, and 2) apparently, if you want to make 16 bit discs from the dvd, you have to go analog out from the tascam? That's pretty weak.

In "Line In", the 722 and 744t have stepped gain controls with steps at 0.1dB.  I had some concern that this would be audible in some way, but having run nearly all line-in on my 722, I can say with certainty that it's not an issue at all.  My only complaint about the gain on the 7 series is that it shows the readout in dB on the LCD only while you're making an adjustment or for a split second afterward.

Mention that on the support forum.  I've bitched about that too.  Maybe they will do something about it eventually.   I don't see the need to constantly show the sample/bit rate as the default since that is a fixed value when using any analog input.

BTW, I've never detected any audible wierdness associated with gain adjustments.
