Soundguy looking for digital recorder....please help
« on: November 21, 2005, 04:10:34 PM »
I'm looking to run sound out of the board directly into a recorder. I've narrowed my choices to the JB3, MicroTrack or the R1. I've heard from a couple of soundguys that the Microtrack will clip/overload badly. I mostly do rock/metal sound, so levels are usualy very hot. Please give opinions.

The Microtracks line-in problems will (hopefully) be addressed in firmware updates, as has been mentioned around here.

But the Edirol R1 should do the job for you if you don't need digital input. With the JB3 your limited to 16 bit if thats a concern. I'm not sure but have read the JB3 is not so good ran line in (anyone know?), I'm sure someone else will comment.

you can use attenuators to decrease the levels to any of these devices

why would a rock/metal show be any hotter than any other type of music if coming out of a soundboard? you set the levels for each instrument for any type of music the same way thruough a mixer
My gear: JK Labs AKG DVC > M10

A lot of the rock bands have the amps that go to 11!
Hehe.....
What kind of output will you be getting from the mixing board?  XLR, RCA, headphone?   There are adapters for most anyting, but it'd be nice to get a device that wil have the proper input.   How much to spend?  A 722/744 would do the trick nicely!

ditto on the jb3.
i come out of all my boards (soundcraft, a&h, midas) and run directly into the jb3 line in.
i mix everything from corporate events to 108db rock shows. best bet is to use a pair of aux sends or the matrix to set up a dedicated stereo tape mix. just carry some adapters to get down to the effin 1/8th" input.
only downfall to the jb3 is that it looks like a POS consumer walkman, not like a piece of pro gear...and that effin' 1/8" input!

Well, this is just my perspective....clubs I work have their levels "set" so I just mostly fiddle with the parametrics and faders and I'm good to go. For instance, when recording a fusion band, the overall levels are usually more dynamic than a rock band's and obviously db levels are lower. I've found myself adding a bit of gain to a lot of my non rock recordings. Also, the levels coming out of the stacks usually dont exactly translate to what goes on tape. Case in point would be vocals.

Chapper...I run RCA's out of most boards.

Well, after considering my options I've decided to go with the JB3 AND the Microtrack. I have all of you to thank for spending the extra dough, hehe. Thanks for the welcome, Zaphod.

Yeah I'd get one if I had a computer to burn my shows to ;)

But I'll probably grab a Microtrack after I get my computer.
