722 Link Feature Opinions Wanted
« on: December 30, 2005, 11:07:03 AM »
Guys,

So I've played around a bit with some of the 722 recording features through some shows and I believe I've come to a conclusion, let me know if you disagree

1.  In large venues like arenas or amphitheaters and clubs where there are no physical obstructions, run linking mode and use balance as necessary (really not needed much at all)

2.  If you are in a club with either an offset taping section or one having some physical obstructions (balcony, room geometry, etc) do not link together.  For example I recorded a show last night where I was slightly offset and the right channel required about 3.5dB more than the left channel.  I suppose I could have corrected thins in link mode with the balance knob, but chose not to run it.

Similar opinions?

I run my gain linked 100% of the time and fix any balance issues.  99% of the time I have to hit the balance left or right a little bit.

Linked gain is the way to go, IMO. I love it.  ;D

EDIT to add: linked gain is easily my favorite feature-set on the 7xx.

The only time I wouldn't run in linked mode is if the two channels are not a stereo pair... like if for some reason you had one channel from a mic and another from a DI.  For the sort of taping we do, the linked mode seems ideal.  You can set the left/right balance and adjust the gain on a single dial if you need to boost or cut during the show and you'll be guaranteed not to alter the balance in the process.  If it turns out that the balance was a little off, you can always adjust it in post, and at least it will be a single adjustment instead of one that varies whenever you made gain adjustments.

Let's say I boost the gain during the show after/during a song. If I'm running linked, I can boost the beginning easily because the two channels were originally changed identically during the show. It'd be more tedious to fix if each knob (L/R behavior) were changed independently.
Out of the game … for now?

Can the MP-2 perform this linking that you guys are talking about? I see a LNK feature on the side.

that link position is pertinent to the limiter only, and not gain. if the selector is on"link"
the limiter is applied to both channels at once, and if the selector is "on" each channel controls the limiter independently.

Yeah I bet in a firmware update they could add a feature to display gain.  I hate having to touch the knobs to see as well.

The link is great.. It would be a nice mod/addition to the V3.

One thing I don't like is having to touch the knobs in order to see what gain I'm running. I'm surprised they haven't added a feature to display the gain for all channels constantly.

I complained about that gain setting display to SD very early on.  When running analog in, there is no reason to have a persistant rate lock display.   Make sure you say something to them or post on the forum.

I've been using the link mode on the 722 to tweak the gain level and the trim pots on the V3 to adjust the balance when needed. That has worked very well for me.

When in Linked the top knob is the gain for both channels and if you are getting a hotter signal on one side you can pan right or left to balance the signal out w/ the lower knob.
