722/744T/702(T) Firmware Beta 1.79

FYI...

Quote
This is not an "official" software release and most likely contain bugs. We have performed extensive testing, and we invite you brave souls to upload this and run it. In general, this is a very stable release, but it is considered beta and should not be used for mission-critical applications.

Please note that this release does NOT contain FireWire mirror writing and copying functionality. While this release does include our all-new FireWire software stack, we are verifying all functionality before we proceed with further software releases. From a user perspective you will see a speed gain and CF mounting on the 722 and 744T. From our developer perspective, this is a significant change in the underlying code base and needs exhaustive testing. Please drop comments regarding bugs to support@sounddevices.com or on our support page on the main site. We/you can discuss future functionality here, but we want to know about bugs with this release directly. The release version, 1.74, can be loaded at any time to revert your recorder to that version. There is no link to the beta page from any other page on Sound Devices web site. We aren't hiding it, but are offering it here since our forum participates tend to be more adventurous.

just updated my 722 to 1.79 beta, am now achieving a sustained 6.1mb/s transfer rate, nice!

one other thing i noticed was that upon connecting the firewire cable to the 722 it goes into 'firewire connection' mode automatically, i previously had to select this manually through the menu.

nice speed

Mine has always gone to the firewire mode automatically, sometimes it doesn't come out of it though(hasn't happened in a while).

BTW, I ran into Jon Tooles at the CAS seminar at Disney Studios on Sunday. He mentioned that 2.0 is where he will be doing IXML and also mirroring. While not a big deal for most of you, this is a huge obstacle in Hollywierd. Oh yeah, and he said it would be a bit before 2.0 got released because of the major changes they need to make. One of the issues they are running into is the UDF format which will be needed for mirroring. But, overall it seems 2.0 is rolling along.

I've not experienced any issues on 1.79. Although, on 1.74 apparently there has been some file naming issues resulting in dropped samples etc. for some reason file are getting a -a -b -c extensions.....and causing errors.....I have confirmed with one other party this has happened (my 722 was loaned out when it happened)....mine apparently quit recording mid show from what I can tell, and his 744t just dropped some samples and started a new file not a a predefined split point...maybe a few seconds? I am gonna mention on the SD website.....if its present in 1.74 then its gotta be in 1.79 since the only difference is the firewire stack???

are these from file splits or recording after errors ???

ive taped about 40+ sets so far on 1.74 and havent noticed any issues when rejoining files in wavelab 5.01b after the 2GB limit

if 1.79 seems as stable as 1.74 PLUS has faster firewire speeds, i cant wait :)

still waiting for a rock solid 2.0 firmware tho ;D

It is almost like there is a buffer underrrun or something. The file abruptly quits, but a new file named T01A, T02A, etc are made. They are not not seamless either. My 722 apparently just stopped when it errored out finally (I didn't see this happen, but saw the files the next day when I got the recorder back). pilgrims622 744t continued recording but exhibited the same file naming scheme for no reason with some dropped samples between. I always format test etc before a show, so not sure why it happened. Definitely not something that could be repeated I don't think. So far, I have had 0 errors personally while recording with my 722.

Last time I checked I was getting 4.6MB/sec with 1.46.  So if 1.74 is 6.1MB/sec, that's 18 minutes vs. 13.6 minutes on 5 gig.  So it isn't a big enough difference for me to risk an upgrade anytime soon.

I recently bought the fastest 4gig compatible card reader I could find and it is only 7MB/sec. Good thing.. If it was 20MB/sec it would have made me a lot less patient with the 722.
