Looks like a nice little pre. Along the same lines as the sax or mp2......best price I could find was about $900. Anyone ever used or heard one of these?
I used the Wendt X2 for about 2 years until I decided to start using 4 mics, then I sold it and went for the X4. Both Wendt units are used a lot in the film and video industry and rarely used in our realm. Most of this is because most people buy gear based on what is recommended to them by other tapers and tapes they have heard. Since there are only a few tapers using them, only a few tapes circulate with Wendt X2's or X4's used as pre-amps. The X2 is really just half of the X4. Same design, same audio quality. I will point out that this is a very clean preamp. Bob Wendt doesn't believe a preamp should color the sound and when your device is one of the domanant players in Hollywood, you do as they want, and most don't want anything coloring their sound. Bob is a great guy and if you call him he'll answer any question you have about the unit.
There should be some shows floating around with either of these two configurations:
AKG 391 > Wendt X2 > SBM-1 > DA-P1
EW SR-77 > Wendt X2 > modSBM-1 > DA-P1
If you can't find any, give me a shout and I'll make you a copy of a show using the Wendt X2. The bottom line is it's pretty transparent which depending on your taste can be a good thing or a bad thing.
