DPA HMA 5000 vs sonasax for 4022
« on: June 12, 2007, 12:56:05 PM »
...what pre-amps are people running with the 4022's for stealthing, low profile applications?  I wanted something small to put infront of an iriver to pwer the 4022's for stealthing.

I read on the DPA HMA 5000, not sure how its powered, or what the outputs are...the sax seemed a viable option, sizewise...

I have run, 4022 > Sonosax SX-M2 > R09, several times with fairly pleasing results.

If its a long show you might need to swap out batteries in the sax after about 4 hrs, or you could make up an external battery sled.

Is the AD-20 crap? Or would that be a decent stealth option with the Iriver?  It has optical and coaxial..

The Soun devices mix-pre seems decent for my application, would you run the mini-plug (tape-out) or use the balanced outputs (a balanced dual XLR > mini plug cable)? Appreciate the input (no pun intended)

I'll be running U89/140/4022  > V-2 > 722 under normal circumstances. This strictly a stealth or theater type thing I am shooting for

How does the MixPre sound compared to the sx-m2? I use my MixPre sometimes with my DPA4052 and MR-1 which sounds great in a dull venue (sounded better than CCM2S>V3>MT, that's ONLY in a dull accustic venue).

If I were you I'll use tape-out...I've tried both balance and tape out from my MixPre. Tape out is easier to use because balance outputs are very hot and you'll find it difficult to adjust gain.

I'm curious how the sx-m2 sound since it is more expensive than the MixPre. Don't know if that means it sounds better or not (or maybe it's just because of the weak US$).

Have you thought about stealthing with your V2? I stealth with my V3 often and at the same time I'm running 2 recorders from it. It's a lot to carry including the external batteries but it's possible.

Good luck!

Yeah and I sold a used one on ebay a few weeks back for $961.00 and I didn't get any takers at $675.00 here in the yard sale ???.I ran a mp-2 with a pair of 4011's in late 02 and 03 and really like it the few times I ran it.I've heard plenty of 4022>sax>ad-1000 that sounds fantastic. But you cant stealth a ad-1000 very easily but a the sbm-1's with the warm oade mod sounds pretty close imo and is very stealthy.

Can't go wrong with 4022>AERCO for open or stealth.

Small, internal 9V's for 2-3 shows in a row, Jensen transformers, 20-60 gain, no lights, custom inputs/outputs, and it sounds really, really, really good with the DPA's

Here's some of mine with this rig:
