Title: iRiver H340 w/ Rockbox
Post by: golf7 on May 26, 2016, 05:28:38 PM
I have an iRiver H340 w/ Rockbox that I upgraded the battery on that I plan to use to record some shows.

I am looking to get the CA-11 or CA-14 cards with the 9200 pre and run it into the line in on the iriver.

Anyone still running one of these?  Any advantage to picking up an M10 over the iriver if I already own the iRiver and the battery is in good shape?

If I recall, you're limited to 16/44.1 with the iRiver? 24-bit has it's advantages for recording. Plus the M10 has awesome battery life and solid state storage. I think there is a mod to swap out the hard drive on the iRiver, though. Possibly better chips on the Sony; I have no idea, but five years is a long time in chip terms...

That was my thought to was that 5 years is a very long time in chip years.  I got the iRiver in 2003-2004 range and things had to change for the better.

Thanks for the input.  I will stick with the iRiver for now with the CA-11/9200 and play it by ear, pun intended, to determine if the M10 would be a worthy upgrade.

I would send an email to Chris about that combo. I used to use an Iriver H120 with a 9100 and CA-14's, could never get the levels high enough. I think Chris told me that the Iriver wasn't the best choice for the 9100, maybe the 9200 is a different story.

I ran my H120 iRiver with two pre's the 9100 and digital via the Denecke AD20 via optical...couldn't get enough gain in quiet settings with the 9100 and in loud settings over drove it with the AD20 (fixed by two Naiant 18db attenuators).

For Rock-n-Roll I think the 9100 was OK...IIRC it only gave 10db gain after the 4k mod was put in the chain...the 9200 has 20db more gain(?)

Valid Points on the gain.  Was trying to re-use something I already had when getting started.  I would think that they 9200 with the additional gain should be sufficient, but always worth an email to Chris about it anyways.

Edit:  Reply from Chris:
"The 9200 provides twice the gain. And will work great with any recorder for recording live shows."
