up close = pretty far fob, stage lip, or even on stage.
Kevin - there are some tutorials on MS on the web. I have yet to do it myself, look around and read up. It's not hard but it takes some work. Basically you'll record the M (mid) to one channel and the S (side) to another. Put them on the computer and using Wavelab (maybe other programs offer decoding I know Wavelab does) you will mix to taste.
the M is generally a cardioid, the S is figure 8. when you mix you can control how much of the S information is present in each channel, thus controlling the width of the stereo field.
there are others on here more experienced with M/S than me though. I know how to do it just haven't done it yet!
