Title: optical cable, AD-20 to JB3...what to buy?
Post by: CTDave on October 10, 2005, 09:52:08 AM
Hey There,

Looking into purchasing an optical cable now that I have the AD-20 and JB3..... any opinions on which is best choice, or most reliable, or best bang for the buck?

Thanks,

Dave

And he's another.  Both of these threads were at the bottom of the page.

The Viablue is a well built german cable.  You can find one on eBay by typing Viablue.  The vendor is in Canada and is a great guy.

There's a thread in the TS Knowledge Base | Archive | Cables forum on optical cable options.  Though not as beefy as I'd like, I prefer my integrated right-angle optical cable, with a new, less expensive source than Sound Pros:

i have a related question.  i've tried searching to no avail.

i'm looking for an optical cable to run from an ad-20 (toslink) to my iriver h140 (1/8").

the issue is, that the optical in on the h140 is jammed up right next to the remote control in, so the wide 'neck' (?) of the standard optical cables means that i can't have the remote plugged in at the same time as the optical cable...

this is a shame cos it's a hell of a lot easier (not to mention stealthier) to use the remote to monitor levels, time and battery-life.

is anyone aware of a toslink to 1/8" cable or reliable adaptor that has a skinnier 1/8" neck than standard?

if i'm not making any sense perhaps a photo would help?

here:

see the remote cable plugged in at the top of the unit.  well the white-rimmed input immediately to the right of it is the optical in.  see my problem?

i've not yet tried an ra adaptor...but going off online photos, i haven't seen any that look any thinner than standard.

thanks for any advice y'all can provide.

WAB - I'd try a right-angle cable (not adapters).  It seems clear from the picture the stock RA cable won't cut it.  But I'd shave down the connector's plastic housing as necessary to make it fit.  The cable itself is pretty thin, so you'll have substantial leeway in shaving down the integrated plastic housing before damaging the cable becomes a concern.

Thanks Brian.  I'll give it a shot.  I wasn't sure if that housing was there for a good reason.

Worst thing that can happen I suppose is I blow $20. :)
