Title: specs for computer for squeezebox
Post by: dave w on February 27, 2009, 01:22:21 PM
I'm finally making the plunge and getting a squeezebox, and since I have only a laptop, will be purchasing a desktop pc largely dedicated just to the squeezebox, and perhaps some torrenting/downloading.  What will I need spec wise (other than sufficient ports for external drives)?  I'm assuming I can go relatively inexpensive for this purpose.  Any suggestions on particular models/manufacturers - I do not plan on building this myself.  Any probs with running Vista with a squeezebox?

shouldn't be too difficult for any computer these days

prob want to get a good bit of RAM - i know squeezecenter is a little resource intensive

here are the system requirements from SlimDevices for the Duet:

System requirements:

    * SqueezeCenterâ„¢ 7+ or SqueezeNetwork
    * All systems: 256MB RAM and 80MB hard disk space
    * Macintosh: Mac OS X 10.3.5 or later
    * Windows: 733Mhz Pentium running Window 2000/XP/Vista
    * Linux/BSD/Solaris/Other (Perl 5.8.3 or later)
    * Ethernet and/or 802.11b/g wireless home network
    * Broadband Internet connection required for Internet radio and music service

I have SqueezeCenter running off of my Thecus N5200 which is a 5 bay NAS (basically a little linux box).

While it won't win any races, it makes a great juke box.  You pay a bit more than a stand alone PC but space is a premium for me so I think it's a great solution.
