Title: 6V 12AHr SLA Charging Issue w/EcoChge SC-61
Post by: LeftoverSammy on January 13, 2004, 11:20:05 AM
Have a question for the SLA gurus. I purchased used two 6V Ecocharge systems for a very good price; one 7.2AHr and one 4.0AHr SLA's in perfect working order and two Ecocharge SC-61 chargers. I also have this 12AHr SLA that came with a trickle charger, however I made a converter cable that will allow the SC-61 charger to mate with the 12AHr SLA so I could use the better charger. Upon testing if the SC-61 would charge this SLA I was surprised after about 3hrs of charge time that I could hear the SLA "bubbling" ....so I shut it down. Whats up with that??  Its a 6V charger with a smart function (goes from rapid charge to trickle when it is full). Why would the SC-61 charger cause the 12AHr SLA to bubble? Is that normal? I put a VOM on the SLA before I put it on charge and it was rather low (5.86V) but was a new SLA as of this summer 03'  Any ideas?? Should I stick with using the trickle charger it came with? Shouldn't matter should it?? Why would the other lower AHr SLA's take the SC-61 rapid charge and not the 12AHr SLA??

Thanks,
LoS

bubble? like the plastic casing? did you cross the polarity on the cable?

Rabhan,
No crossed wires. I used my VOM to check the continuity  before I even powered up. If they were crossed it wouldn't have charged for 3 hrs and not blow - so I doubt that is whats going on.

The bubbling I spoke of is happening inside the SLA. Sounds like the acid is boiling or something. This didn't happen right when it was plugged in - it was after about 2~3hrs of rapid charging.

The LAST thing you want is one of these bad boys going BOOM in your home. Showering yourself with acid is not what I had in mind....

My guess is that the rapid charge rate MAY be too much for this certain variety of SLA. But that is just a guess at best....

Anyone know what the charge rate is on the SC-61?? I think its only around 1A but I may be wrong.

I heard there was some mod done to one of your chargers to allow it to charge a 12AHr SLA. Do you know why??

the SC61 standard eco charger will charge a 6v 12ah, it just wont float. thats why i had xenotronix mod two so that they would float.
