Title: transferring records to computer
Post by: MattD on June 18, 2003, 01:36:30 PM
Anyone know a good plugin for SoundForge (any DirectX plugin should load) or other software that will do a good job removing pops and clicks and minimizing surface noise from record playback?

I have a stack of records that I'm transferring to CD for my grandparents and want to make them sound as good as they can.

I have the Waves bundle, so I'll have to check and see if there's an appropriate plugin there, plus the generic SF ones.

Thanks,
-Matt

what pre are you running your player thru?

The phono pre is on my dad's gear - something from the mid 80s. I think it's Acoustic Research or something like that. I'd have to look to be certain. It's nothing spectacular. But then again, I'm just doing this as a favor for my grandparents, so I dunno how perfect it needs to be.

If I ever go 24/96 on these records, then I'll find someone with a kickass setup.

its just really really important to be running at least a low end pre to preserve the eq curve of the records... if i were you id run the pre > your outboard A/D > digi in... the a/d on the analog in of most cards sucks

shit, I'd just as well leave the pops and clicks from the vinyl in there.
People that grew up with sound just seem to like it anyway

After listening to both methods, I decided to do just that. It sounds fuller unprocessed and sterile after processing. I guess it's the way vinyl was meant to be.

This is gonna sound like a really dumb question, but before you go through the hassle of converting the vinyl - are you sure these records are not available in a digital format?

You may be able to find these recordings at local shops, online retailers, specialty shops, etc.  Could save you a lot of trouble.

Well, for the $0.27 for each blank CD (thank you TS.com special!), this method is much more economical and less time consuming for me. I can do it while I'm job hunting, just listening for when to flip sides of the record. That way I get a few done every day. Split tracks and burn - easy as anything, and sounds pretty good to me.

I'd find it more trouble to go shopping for all of these.
