Just got a package out of the blue from Benchmark containing fuses and the following note:
The four (4) included T 0.5A 250VAC (500ma) fuses replace the fuses included with one the (sic) following products:
* DAC1, 110V operation only
* ADC1, 110V or 220V operation
Do not use the original fuses, including the spare fuses, as they may not be the correct value. Using an incorrect value could present a serious safety risk, including risk of fire.
For further assistance please e-mail service@benchmarkmedia.com or call 1-800-262-4675.
And no wonder. I checked the spare fuses that came with the unit and they're 5A, not 500mA :o I'm off to check the fuse in the unit.

Thanks for the info. Does this relate to all existing units, or just a select few?

I'd call if there is any question whatsoever.

I have had mine almost since they came out, I can't imagine this would affect anything but newer units. Maybe they just inserted the wrong fuse at the factory on the latest build?

That's what i'm assuming. I finally made it up to the attic where my spare fuses were and they're both 500mA.

I am going to e-mail Benchmark & ask them about available updates for the older units. My understanding is that they sound better now?

From what I was told today, there has'nt been any noticable sonic changes in the units since they were upgraded to 192k back in '94.
I just purchased the silver faceplate! You know you want one Carl. ;)

I may just buy one depending on what color my amp ends up being! Well there is a stepped vollume control now? I have read on Agon that the newer units somehow sound better but if Benchmark is telling you different.......................

i've read that they sound best when not used as a gain stage.
something about the signal expected by an amp...and many amps not likeing this passive gain crap.
we'll see.
i'm hooked on the "preamp makes a BIG difference" philosophy right now.
the right pre can make a decent amp sing like a bird.
