Title: Recs for 2 channel power amp
Post by: dmonterisi on November 10, 2003, 07:55:27 PM
so i'm running a marantz sr-19 home theater receiver > b&w n804's, and assorted b&w speakers for surround...looking to add a 2 channel power amp (the sr-19 has pre-outs) to better drive the N804's.  but want to keep the surrround option.  who's got a good recommendation.  willing to buy used (would prefer it).  looking to spend under $1k.  N804's are rated up to 200w @ 8ohm.  thoughts?

thanks

I have never had a Anthem.
It just looked interesting and fell into the price range with the demo units.
If you call and talk to Kevin he could give you a good idea of what it will sound like.

I don't think you'd go wrong buying any on your short list.  I've purchased tubes from Kevin at Upscale - very informative guy and I trust his recommendations completely.  With the Anthem, you get a new unit with warranty, a definite plus over the used amps.  The Anthem has a tube gain stage, so you can mess with the sound a little by rolling different tubes through it (and you get access to Kevin's "secret stash" of tubes by purchasing an amp from him).  The Anthem has as much power as you'd ever need.  The Anthem has received nothing but positive reviews.  The other amps are definitely good, and I'm sure they all sound different.  The advantage of buying one of the used amps on your list is that if you don't like it, you can probably sell it for what you paid.  If you didn't like the Anthem, you'd probably lose a little on resale.

thanks craig, that was basically my thinking...i'm gonna call kevin this afternoon and talk to him about it.  they have an open box anthem with full warranty as well on their demo list for 999...sounds like a very good deal to me.

i've been mulling it over a lot for the past couple days and while i'm still not sure, i think i'm going with the amthem amp2 SE.  I think the tube stage will add a nice bit of warmth and the ability to tweak the sound a bit and 200w of solid state power per channel will push the b&w's nicely...let's see how long before i get evicted.

I my self owna pair of B&W 605's, I also like it WARM!  I run a McIntosh 7200.  250 a side.  With the B&W's you really want to make sure you give yourself some extra room with the wattage.  They are some of the least efficiant speaker you can buy.  I would also recomend a bryston 4bst, deffinite powerhouse 30 year warranty, made in Canada.  If you take a trip up there the when the dollar is strong, you can avoid the import mark up.  Just dont tell them you have a very expensive amp in your trunk!
Mac are my favorite though, you just cant beat two huge glowing blue analog gauges.  Plus Jerry used to run a pair of these for guitar amps.

You could find out what amps they use to voice them at the manufacture which built them.
For my home stereo I'm using Eggleston Andra II speakers which I purchased used from Wextrax mastering labs he used them for mastering.
He was bi-amping them with Pass labs amps because he said that is what Eggleston used to voice the speakers in the design of speakers.
