Essentials list for festival taping.....
« on: June 17, 2004, 12:24:57 PM »
Alright guys I looked through the archives and did not see a complete list of what people should bring to festivals for taping (other than their rig). I'm wondering if some of you with lots of experience would mind making a list for me and as well as other newbies in the future. Sorry if this has already been posted. I'm looking to go as light as possible but I want to make sure I'm set for anything that may happen.
                                                     Thanks

In addition to my regular recording gear of:

Mountainsmith Blaze
mic caps
shockmount
ORTF/DIN/NOS bars
active cables
mic bodies
interconnects
V3
AES/EBU cable (soon replaced by Grace optical mod)
Hosa ODL-312 (soon replaced by Grace optical mod)
RC 9.6v batt for Hosa (soon replaced by Grace optical mod)
optical cable
clamps x 3
18" gooseneck
small flashlight
Etymotic ER6s
notepad
Sharpie
coax RCA cable
duct tape
various spare cables
  • V3 power cable
  • interconnect backups
  • optical backup
I'll carry to festivals this summer:

2 more SLAs for the V3
an SLA for the NJB3 + cable/VR
charger(s) for the SLAs
power strip
tent stakes
garbage bags
poncho (for me)
rain hat (for me)
umbrella x 2 (1 for mics, 1 for gear as sun/rain protection)
towel
large blanket/tarp to stake out my space
sunscreen

And this year I'll probably also take my AES/EBU XLR > RCA cable to use with my D100 + batts + some extra DATs in case I have trouble with my NJB3 in the sun/heat (though I doubt I will).

I always take a bag with wheels.  Never know how far you will have to walk and all those extra SLAs will kill your back.

Also sunglasses and some type of munchie would be good, along with one of those little fishing chairs....you know the ones with three legs that fold up really small.  If it might be muddy take a small tarp or a blanket.

wet dry bag for torrential downpours.
You can get these at outdoor stores for about $10-15.

1. Buy a regular umbrella.
2. Cut off the knobby/handle end
3. use electrical tape to fasten it to your stand

better yet, use gaffer's taper so that you don't get the sticky residue from electrical tape.

garbage bags? Skalinder, you are such an amateur ;)

Construction Contractor Bags! They are much heavier and will not get rips and tears like regular garbage bags. They are so strong I carried my whole rig back to the condo in that torrential downpour in Telluride last year

open up the bag and put your gear down inside before the show even starts, that way you're not scrambling to cover up in the rain.

True, true - but in this case, at least, out of ignorance.  I actually never use 'em - I always have the topcase from my motorcycle with me into which I drop my gear if it rains.  Even though the top doesn't close completely with the actives hanging out of it, drop a towel on top of everything and then close the lid and it's totally dry inside through even nasty weather.  My top case solid plastic is sturdier than your pussy contractor bags!  :P

Don't believe I saw anyone mention stakes... a must have to adhere your stand to the ground on windy days... especially, if you've got an umbrella at the top.

the stakes are good.
I also brought in one of those foldable tables kinda like the folding chairs.  It was used to set the rig on around mud or you can sit on it if it was dry.  Never had a problem getting it in the roo- i just said it was a stand.
I also brought a lot of water and ran out every time.

forgot about those, used them at the roo w/ some string.  The was the first time i had used them and was happy.  Had some time to kill when i was breaking down so i did some tackle tests and it took A LOT to move the stand.

As for trash bags i used my contractor bag and carried my gear around like santa during the Full down pour.
