From an old thread on Oade board.........

xy and other coincident configurations align the capsules so that all
sounds, direct or reflected, reach each capsule at the same time.
this gives you perfect phase coherency.  this phase coherency tends
to make the midrange and high end sharper and more defined, but what
you perceive relatively is less low end.

any near coincident configuration results in phase incoherencies.
phase incoherencies give you less midrange and HF energy (or more
low end energy, in relative terms), and are interpreted by the ear
as spaciousness or diffuseness, aka boominess.

Ok Imagine Running 483 >D-mod UA-5 >JB3 ,

Gov't Mule In a Nice sounding theater ,
12th row (which will turn out to be about 30-40ft from the stage )
DFC .
Would you run XY, DIN , ORTF?

Ive confused myself now with these Hypers.  Ive been running cards Cheap superlux Knockoff's (samson CO2's).
I assume the 483's will be "sorta" bright , so Im worried XY will loose to much of the that "Low end" Mule sound , Which I love

But worry that ORTF will create a "center" Gap in the Image

So is it the ever faithful DIN ?

TIA
Nick

ORTF would definitely give you a hole in the middle of the image with the 483's. I don't think that ORTF (17mm & 110 degrees) is appropriate for hyper's no matter what.

callery and d5,
what both of you said definitely makes sense. if i remember correctly ORTF is at 110 degrees, which wuld create a gap with hypers. DIN from a 70 degree angle sounds interesting  :)  +t for the both of you for input and ideas.

Definitely 'xy' from that close. Mule tends to be pretty bassy... also many theaters are bassy... and 'xy' tends to eliminate some of the unnecessary bass overload on the recording. I taped STS9 (super bassy) from 15' back with my 463's and the tapes sound great!!

The sample sounds nice. Nick, what did you think of 70deg. compared to your 90deg.
recordings?  Have you done any DIN 90deg from the same spot?

I have not had the mic long enough to run but one show with them , I will be taping the same band in the same Venue from the same spot this Friday and will prolly try 90 deg this time around.

Now ya'll got me worried, cause like someone said the Mule tends to be a bit heavy on the bottom end heavy for my ears . so Im now contemplating XY aswell to roll off some of the bass.

I'll prolly run 70deg for the Uptown (2-11) show , as the acoustics are pretty good there.
And may try Xy for the Columbia (2-17) show. As I dont remember the Blue note having really good sound and kinda Boomy from what I remember

Thanks for the help Guys.
