[HELP] Drop off w/ PMD 660 recording (pic)
« on: April 08, 2006, 09:37:26 PM »
This might be more appropriate for playback but I wasn't sure.

I BTed a Dylan recording on bt.dylantree.com of Stockton 4/3/2006 and after some people listen they noticed a drop off at 3:38 of the first song. I had listened a few time to the show and hadn't noticed it. I went back and sure enough there is a drop off (only the right channel) during the original wav file download from my PMD660. I have erased my wav file from the CF card from the recorder so I can't check that to see if it is from the actual recording.

A few questions:
1. Could this have happened with the actual recording or was it during the transfer from the 660>desktop?
1a. What would cause this?
2. What do I do now? I can copy and paste the left channel to the right (about 00:00.174 seconds) but there is still a little change noticable to the ear.
3. Leave it and put a comment in the info sheet?

Thanks for the help.

Mike Tausig, Dan Nolan & Dan Krass you will have to look for this in the copies I sent. Sorry.

that happened to me a couple of time when I recorded with my UA5.  I would accidentally turn the phatom power off and the wave would look similar to that, but in both channels.  I know that's not much help.

if it isnt horrible (and your skills are to par) i would just copy the good chanel into the drop out AND note it in the txt file... or not transpose, but still note it...

btw, that IS a screen shot  :P

Same thing happened with the Gilmour recording 4/17. I'm lost at what is causing this, but I do know that the right channel connection doesn't lock in like the left and this is the channel that the drop off occurs in.

Ideas....it doesn't seem to happen on every file.

that definately could be part of it, especially if you are using the unit in a stealth setting (dylan & gilmour, i just assumed stealth).  did the drop out occur around the same time both times?  maybe it is a media thing... but i would venture that if you are not locking in to the xlr, like lee said, you could be loosing p48 intermittently.

Sorry can't really help with this but I noticed something similar on a recording of mine. It's not really audible and the spectral view looks ok so it's not a biggie. Of course it would be good to know what's causing this???

I can only think of the microphone cables because it's only one channel...

The rig was: Studio Projects C4 (card) > UA-5 > NJB3

Any ideas would be welcome! Thanks!

1a. What would cause this?

I would check the right microphone cable to make sure all the connections are solid.

BTW, with ALT+Print Screen you should be able to copy the screen and then paste it into MS Paint.

Thanks for the advise everyone. I will have the right mic and connection checked. +T everyone.

I knew there had to be a way to copy the screen but I didn't want to search for it at the time plus I just bought a digi camera and wanted to test it out.   :)

I've always wondered how to do that!!!  +T

As for your problem with the 660... double check your xlr connections.  I had a bad solder joint cause me similar problems once.  Sometimes it is only when you bend the side of the cable near the connector, or sometimes it is all the time.  In my case, there was a single strand of copper that was floating around inside the head.  I moved my bag around and the channel went.  Then I twisted the cable around and it went away for awhile, and then did some crackling during the rest of the show.

Awesome, sounds right, I only detect it when I stealth. I have my 660 in my hoodie pocket and that always causes a little bend in the XLR connector. I will look at the solder and look at making a bigger hole in the pocket so it will fit the connections around my body....and it's becoming around the body, the older I get  ;)

yep, hit ctrl and print screen at the same time, then open MS paint, go up to the top to "edit" then paste..

FWIW, both alt|print screen and ctrl|print screen work.

So if you find out that it is not the right channel of the mic cable check the right channel of your PS if it is a separate unit.
