Oade modded UA5s - GONE!!
« on: May 03, 2005, 11:55:15 AM »
Just talked to the fine folks at Oade Bros while ordering my Tmod+ UA5.   ;D

They indicated they have only 5 UA5s in stock and they don't have any prospects to pick up more units (discontinued, after all).  So, if you want one...or have been on the fence about pulling the trigger...note that they don't come up used all that often (though that may change as new gear hits the market)...and consider GETTING ONE NOW.

No affiliation, etc., just a friendly message based on my phone convo.

End of an era?  Congrats on the T+. I was just wondering if you picked one up yet.

So I wonder if they will consider modding units not bought through them now that it wont cut into their selling business?

My assumption on that has been that they didn't want to be responsible for a used unit that may be busted when they got it.
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.

yeah, and I'd venture a guess that in the future, they will want to spend their time modding the Marantz recorders, the Fostex FR-2, probably the new Edirol R4, and whatever else may come down the pipeline.  they probably won't want to mod the older ua-5's anymore.

and that would probably rule.
Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.

We are at an inbetween time in portable taping.  I think this is just one more sign that the next generation of taping equipment is arriving or will be arriving in the next year or so.  IMO

hmmmm......if I become a gear-slut at 8:03 AM, will I still respect myself by lunch??

My current rig:

   SPCM-8 > SPBM-6 > NJB3 (analog line in)

I was waiting for a check to arrive to step up and get a digital cable & then got real busy & spaced it. Was planning on grabbing the cable this AM (SP's recc. by Bean +t forthcoming).....and am know having early morning delusions about my financial status & whether or not I wanna 'give it up' to the Brothers Oade & confirm my gear-slut status. (do I scrawl my email on the wall of a Good Guys or somethin'?)

would love to hear some informed opinions regarding my position from those who've been here, gear-sluts, reformed g-sluts, even team-tapir-monastary with words of chaste.....how could this improve my bottom line, set me on a self destructive path of ebay binges & credit card frequent flyer miles, or a combination of the two?

i'm very curious about the stealth ability of the unit, it looks small....but these lyin' eyes have fooled me before. i think i've seen it on many lineage from great sounding stealth recordings...just want to make sure!

fwiw, i love the NJB3 and plan on sticking with the digital_recordable_nomedia forever....or until something flips the gear-slut in me i guess. i was absolutely drooling at the not-yet-released digital recorder that someone posted a link to a week or 3 ago....is the UA-5 going to serve me when I upgrade to that ($400'ish retail) when it becomes available?

thanks in advance to the brain-trust

Damn. I really want to get a Warm Mod+ but I don't have enough money :P. Would be cool if he could mod ua-5's that he didn't mod already.

It looks to me like Doug has made a fine business out of doing mods.  All the effort is in R&D - actually doing the mod work is no big deal.  That said, I would expect him to want to preserve that time investment and revenue stream into the future.  While UA-5s are available I can see why he'd prefer to sell you one and make the extra margin.  But if they're discontinued, I'd expect him to open it up to all UA-5s regardless of where they were bought.  No need to shut down a perfectly healthy mod business - the margins are better than selling unmodified retail stock.  Wait and see.

except that Doug has health issues that prevent him from spending a lot of time on the bench, this coupled with the fact that he is working on mods for other gear leads me to believe that this is probably it for the Oade mod-ua5's. He's not shutting down a perfectly healthy mod bsuiness, he's just changing the focus of that business.

I had been entertaining the idea of picking up a W+ sometime this year. Oh well, I'll just put the cash towards toob playback!   :D

i asked doug if he would continue to mod units he sold, he replied

"Hi!  Yes, I will continue to support the UA5s we sold for many more
years to come. Once we run out of them, we will not be selling new mod'd
units, but will continue do do MODS for a long time ! "

so for those of us who have em, we can add +'s or w, p, t.
which is good news.

So I can buy one stock elsewhere and send it to him?  Wouldn't he be concerned w/ liability issues?
