Dual Discs
« on: May 11, 2005, 06:47:08 PM »
I tell you what, I have gotten two of the new dual discs that record companies are pushing now, where there is normal CD audio on one side and hi res audio on the DVD side and am sold...both cases (springsteen and DMB) the discs were as much as a regular CD would cost and the hi resolution side is fantastic...this is something the record companies should have done a long time ago....

The problem is that Dual Discs are not actually redbook complient.

I just picked up a hybrid SACD set the other day. I didn't even know such a thing existed. Now I just need to get an SACD capable player.  :P  At least I can enjoy the CD audio in the meantime.

There's a bunch of folks calling them Dog Discs and Dumb Discs.
I haven't heard one yet.

What gets me, is that they still don't have a standard for resolution and content for the DVD side.
You never know what you're getting until you open it and read the fine print.

Yeah, that's pretty foul.  Also, i've read that dual discs can get stuck in the drive, i'd rather not risk that kind of damage to my source for a $15 disc.

I think i'll just stick to MFSL mastered discs for the time being (as well as other audiophile brands) for HQ content.

I've heard of people who are afraid that they'll get stuck, but no one who has had a jammed drive.
The tolerance is pretty tight and D.D. does (just) come in under the wire.

See the linked board for intolerable, opinionated DVD-A enthusiasts.    ;D

Be forewarned that 'advanced resolution' does not necessarily mean 24-bit.
Case in point, the new Dave Matthews dualdisc is 48/16, not 24-bit.
These record companies have to be clearer.  wtf does 'advanced resolution' exactly mean? Just give us the exact specs. DVD-A, otoh, are very clear in there specs. Thank you.

I've got the Springsteen and the NIN and I have the Stones Let It Bleed

the LIB won't play in my car, the Boss and NIN will

the Boss and NIN though seem to be giving my 3960 some fits on the cd side

cool idea, it will be great though when they get all of the kinks worked out

Ive picked up quite a few Dual Discs and I havnt had a problem with any of them except for Gold Medal by The Donnas and there was a recall on that disc.  I do love the surround sound mixes on NIN - With Teeth and Mudvayne - The End of All Things To Come.  I agree there needs to be a standard for the advanced res. but I can only listen to the dolby digital tracks as I only have a SACD player.  I wish that there were more hybrid SACDs but with the Dual Disc becoming so popular I have a feeling that it will become the format that sticks around for a good long while.

Its a shame that the new DMB, Velvet Revolver, and Mudvayne - Lost and Found DDs dont have surround sound tracks on them.

I'm a fossil from the 2.0 world.  All I ever wanted was 24/96 stereo.
Was that so much to ask for     ::)

but i have absolutely ZERO interest in surround mixes of music rignially recorded in mono or stereo...

You're in good company on DSD, Cheskey agrees loudly, in particular.
I don't see the science that makes it so.   Again, I'm a fossil.
Higher clock can't be good because it "must" equal higher jitter has been my conumdrum.
On the other hand, it isn't possible to ABx SACD to DVD-A due to the different decoders.
Is it the process or the gear ?

Anyhow, I duck DSD for different reasons. Mostly because I don't have any DSD nor SACD gear, and I can't burn them, either.
When I can burn them, I may buy the gear.

Here's a wager for a one sealed, blank SACD disc:
Which happens first, the Phish Reunion tour or an SACD burning program is marketed for under $100 ?

My money's on the music.   :D
