Title: XLR Cables Dying help
Post by: alienbobz on December 28, 2004, 11:57:33 AM
Last night one of my XLR cables. Luckily I found this out before the band started, and I was able to patch out of the board. This has been the second one that has died since Halloween. Is there anything that could cause this? I am just guessing that they were both old and it was going to happen. I am going to buy the replacement today so I just wanted to see why they do die. Just in case you are wondering, they Blue Kiwi cables.

In my limited experience, it sounds like a short.
Easily fixed by resoldering the wires onto a new/existing xlr end.
Of course it could be something completely different not seeing your cable.
If there are no major kinks in it, I would imagine it is just a bad wire
that needs some attention. hope this helps.

edited to fix the bad spelling I have caught so far..

Ever7y pair of Blue Kiwi cables I have ever seen someone use has a short in it.  Mine that Dustin got eventually shorted, Dave Mallick's I saw in person short out, etc.  Resolder them.  Obviously BLUE has a serious soldering problem, not unlike myself!  BTW and FYI, they will send you a new one if you e-mail, no questions asked.  Back to work.

Thanks for the help both of you. I have no clue on how to solder them myself. I am thinking about just ordering a new pair of different cables, but I would want to get them by Friday (I plan to tape over the weekend). Anyone know if Live Wire cables are any good? I may look around at guitar center for some cables. +T to both for the help.

Thanks for the input, but again I am too lazy to learn the techniques of soldering. I know I could save myself the $90 I am about to spend, but I don't mind doing that if I don't have to worry about these damn Blue cables again. Hopefully these Mogami's will be fine.

or, you could find an electronics repair shop (the more "mom & pop" the better) and have them check 'em out and, if appropriate re-solder the connectors (should be easily doable for under $10 and even then you're getting ripped off a bit).  All cables have connectors soldiered to the wire ends -- no guarantee that the mogamis won't fail at some point too -- better (imho) to get what you have fixed than add another unknown to your signal chain.

Went with the Mogamis. I am hoping to test them out tomorrow. Hopefully everything works fine. Thanks for the input everyone.

you could send them to me with return postage, and i'll simply remove all the old soldering on the xlr and re-do the ends with silver solder....basically a full clean up.

i've done that for several folks' mic cables.

I can't believe I just read a thread where I was thanked... ;D  Just send them to Blue or legeddy, apparently he is pretty good at not letting the smoke out!  Either way, it's the best of both worlds...FREE!

Good luck, and soldering will come in handy one day if you can learn!

Marc's craftmanship is excellent.  He made my cables for me.  Get those Kiwis fixed and dump them on eBay.  eBayers love Kiwis for some reason.  Might be the shiny flexo.  Hmmm ....

they are great intro cables.

I think Canare Starquad are the best intro cables.  Great DIY, cheap prices, and nice deep base.  Hell,  they are just good solid sounding cables.  I know nothing about the Kiwis except they come in fancing flexo/packaging and are sold at guitar shops.

made by BLUE, nice gold connectors on them, decent cable quality, decently well built, not too expensive.
