I've got a bunch of old Nikon camera equipment that I don't know what to do with anymore.
(2) Nikon F3's with motor drives
(1) Nikon FM with motor drive
Lenses: All Nikkor: 24mm f2.8, 35mm f2, 50mm 1.4, 85mm f2, 180mm 2.8 (early AF)
Plus misc. stuff like a light meter, and a couple of flashes.
I used this stuff, as a news photographer before I got into audio. It's pretty well beat up.
All the lenses are the non AF except as noted.
Is there a market anywhere for this stuff?

try fredmiranda.com in the buy and sell forum- sometimes you get students who need cheaper stuff.
-
try a local college that still has a darkroom and does 35mm photography. You might find some buyers there.

Keep in mind those lenses should work just fine on the new fangled nikon mount dslr's. They will just have about 50% more effective focal length.

Explain to me how you get more focal length out of a sensor crop?

Sorry, I may not have used the best/correct terminology. It *is* just cropping compared to a full 35mm frame. The rule of thumb I have heard is that the "effective" focal length of the lens will be about 1.5x what you are used to. Mostly I was just trying to make him aware that his older Nikon lenses can still work on the newer Nikon mount dslr's...

well it is whatever the crop factor is, but you really dont gain any focal length, you just lose the corners of your lens unless you shoot on a full fram esensor.

oh come on, you knew exactly what he was talking about. and he referrence 50% more "effective" focal length, which is an accepted terminology.

accepted but wrong. it isnt even effective focal length, effective focal length would be something like adding a doubler to the lens. it's a misconception i got wrong for quite a while as well.

There is definitely a market.. Your best bet may be ebay.
Assuming you can still get film and processing, those cameras will be going strong in 20 years. Unfortunately, that may be a big assumption.. The same probably cannot be said for the latest from nikon, etc.
I thought pretty hard about whether to buy a new digital nikon for a sailing trip to alaska or getting a nice scanner and just shooting slide film. The boat broke so I went and taped some shows instead.
I have a good rep on eBay 100% feedback etc...
I'd really hate to sell some of the stuff, because, like I said, it is kind of beat up. I used this stuff 10+ hrs/day for the better part of 20 years.

Not sure what you're getting at here, but if you're concerned about selling beat-up stuff and killing your good eBay rep, just make sure you describe it in excruciating detail, with pics, so expectations are set properly up front.

Yeah, that's my worry that somone may not be happy with it.
Good idea about detail description... Thanks guys.

Chuck,
I just read through this thread and... If you plan on selling I'd take some nice pics and sell on Ebay. Fredmiranda.com in primarily Canon digital. A few Nikon digital bodies and lens float thru but are hard to sell on that site. Nikonians.org is a better place to try, but again, most folks have made the switch to digital and AF. If the lenses you are selling are MF you'll have a hard time selling them on either of the two sites I mentioned. There are still alot of film shooters out there and they are looking for fast lenses like you have. Best bet is Ebay unfortunately. Good luck,
Bill

Thanks for the advice.
I have one of the lenses up on eBay now.
-
I'd possibly consider purchasing that vivitar flash..I think I replied with a pm about it
-
Vivitar zoom thyristor 285 with pro base

Hey Chuck,
I bought several photographic items on www.photo.net . You will find that there are still many film based photographers who access this site especially for used purchases at some reasonable prices. A great deal of Nikon equipment is available on the site as well.
Enjoy!
J.

Thanks for the info.
I've started to sell some of it on eBay. I've had pretty good luck so far.
