Title: Digi-Mod UA5 question
Post by: Elana on August 29, 2007, 09:30:31 PM
I have a digmodded UA5 that Busman then modded w/ his BM2p+ mod.  I think I remember reading that digimodding the UA5 sends the digital signal to both the coax and optical outputs at the same time, which nullifies the switch that goes between them.  If this is the case, can I hook up a recorder to each output simultaneously and get a feed to both?  The reason I ask is I have a JB3, but I just bought a microtrack.  I wanna make sure I don't eff up the microtrack recording the first time I use it, by have the jb3 as backup.

From the UA-5 FAQ (http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,14389.0.html):

What's the coax/optical switch on the back all about?

"The switch is for selecting which digital input the UA-5 should use.  It does not determine which digital output is active - both the coax and optical output are active simultaneously."

So, as I understand it, that means you could run outputs to two different recorders. I can't say for certain whether it would affect either of the outputs, but I would guess not. You might try testing it in your living room just to make sure.

just make sure if you are going 24 and 48 or 96 to set the advance switch on the back to ON

Ok thanks, I'm just doing 16/44.1 now, may try higher later.

hopefully I will have time to run a quick test first at home before the show I'm going to on Saturday.

you can record to the mt at 24/48 _and_ to the jb3 at 16/48 simultaneously.

now i have the oade w+mod, and use and iriver, but i dont believe there would be a difference in your setup.  now that i reread your post, can the jb3 record at 16/48?? i have never owned one, but if it does, you are golden.

why record at 48 instead of the full rate of 96??  well, this way, your recording will work like the above, and you can run your cf card in the mt for a full 2 hours before the track split.  at 24/96, you will only get 1 hour record time.  and while the optical out is able to truncate the last 8 bits, it cannot resample sample rates.

Recent testing indicates that the digi mod UA5 always puts out a 24bit signal anyway (regardless of the ADV switch setting).  Your 16 bit recorder is just going to truncate those 8 bits it can't use.  The ADV switch does need to be on, however, to send the higher sample rates to the recorder.

There doesn't appear to be any interest in confirming this claim, although it was just made last month.
