Title: Nuemann AK30 (omni's)
Post by: waltmon on June 02, 2017, 04:24:12 PM
Has anyone ever messed with these Neumann Omni caps? Nick is doing up my actives right now and I've been considering a set.

Thanks.

I did a few times when Jerry from STL loaned me his full set of caps. I liked the subcard tapes from that weekend a thousand times better.

The bass response of the Omni caps is pretty incredible but it needs a lot of EQ when used from a distance.

I love my KM143 set for onstage use, that's the Subcards. Evidence seems to indicate that they need to be spaced widely in order to make stereo. Closely spaced, they are too much like omni to get much difference.

I used these for a few shows and always found them to be very muddy and boomy, even when in close proximity to the amps or on stage; facing the band or away.  I never was able to make them work alone, with a board feed, or with my 140s/150s.
Hope this helps

The Naples philharmonic uses 3 km130s as mains for capture of their performances.  They are excellent mics for more intimate classical work, but I wouldn't choose them for stadium or distant situations.
