Clamp or Stand - Which do you use more often
« on: December 09, 2011, 02:27:34 PM »
In light of the recent excellent "Theater Seat Arm" and "Clamp-aholics" threads, I thought I would inquire....which do you use more often.....clamp or stand?

Personally, I clamp more than I use a stand, but that is primarily because most times I am pretty sure that there will be someone else there who will run a stand or have a clamp-n-extension setup. That and the fact that I don't have a functional 'FOB' style stand and only have a gargantuan 13ft bogen stand that I pretty much refuse to use unless at an outdoor show. I would say 80% of the time I go recording without my own stand.

So...what say you?

A live concert to me is exciting because of all the electricity that is generated in the crowd and on stage. It's my favorite part of the business, live concerts.

I know I can clamp and use an extension at all of the venues where I normally tape. I throw the stand in the backseat when I go to a new venue, but I usually end up finding a place to clamp. I think the stand has only been used outdoors this year. Not having to block the legs of a tripod has been a great stress reliever for me.

Super Clamp + 396B-3 articulating arm + Rapid Adaptor  = Win

The 396 >= 099 to me but otherwise thats the same setup I use.

I have a standard FOB stand, a 396 arm, and a 9' normal stand. On the clamp side, I have a super, a nano, and a joby. I'm missing a rowi-clone and a bigger C-clamp which would round out the functional models but have only run into one or two situations where I'd have really wanted a rowi (mostly for tables where I need the 396 as well). I really should pick up a C-clamp, we have a venue in town which we can use one in the ceiling but you need a C-clamp.

The arm and the FOB stand get used about equally as I'm doing a lot of taping where I run solo anymore and may not have access to a clamp spot (railing, ledge, rafter beam, etc). I havn't used my bigger stand in almost 2 years though, even at festivals but I, so far, refuse to sell it since I can think of the occasional situation where I'd need the additional height. I've thought about getting the heavy duty bendy arm that Skalinder uses, or maybe the 099b pole that scoobie et al use to compensate, not sure if I thought that would be better or not.

Y'know, I would've thought that my number of clamping gigs would leave my uses of a stand in the dust.  But in looking back over the past year, I'd say for me it's been just about even with the clamps having a small edge.  Shockmounts, 099 and super clamps, hell yeah!

You can't hang a stand from a light grid... ;D

OK, with enough zip ties and gaff, but you shouldn't.

Just recently got a selection of Clamps and now have a 099b....but....I always bring a Stand....

The Arsenal of clamps:
1. Nano (Chinese Knockoff of the Bogen) is a nice clamp and I've offered it to those whom clamp to my ancient 13ft Bogen...everyone likes using it.
2. Bogen Super Clamp. Have yet to have a reason to use it.
3. Bogen Speed Clamp. Was effective mounted to a Dance Tent pole with my old Bogen 3 Microphone bar mounted directly to it...Do use the speed with the 099b at one bar I run regularly at.

I clamp my Rowi to my stand, because the threads on the top of my stand have been stripped for like 12 years now :P ;D But yeah, Im usually(90$0 of the time, I'm in the "Sweet Spot" and need a stand to accomplish that. I still have my AEA stand i got back from SS back in '99  :) Shes still working :)
