Topic: Shock mount for under your T-bar...

Is there a shock mount that that you could put on top of your mic stand that would basically be "under" your Vark bar or whatever?  My thoughts are to use the stock Neumann mic clips on the T-bar and basically shock mount the whole t-bar.  The 150's are so small almost every shock mount swallows them.  I often run with out shocks because it's a lot lower profile etc...especially from seats in theaters. Less bitchin from people behind me etc.  I had something way back I think it was an AT brand...it was chrome...want something lower profile (black, grey etc)

Thanks...I was actually look more for something that screw mounts on top of the stand that would screw into the bottom of the Vark.

Yes - the Rycote Portable Recorder Suspension will do this perfectly.



There is also an HD version for heavier rigs.



Although designed for a portable recorder, it's also perfect for sitting under a stereo bar to shockmount a pair of microphones.

It looks like my followinbob 12" bar will mount up perfectly on that...that'll easily support links and a pair of 150's!

Seen you post a few times about saving up for the INV 6.  Here's a way to get a pair of INV 6's for about half price if you don't mind some DIY.

Nice clear photo.  Were the mics set up to record something outside or was this just to make the photo?  With them being so far from the center of the stand, is this tippy?

It was a quick photo demonstrating; the clamp, shock mount, AKG CK91's using stock OEM capsule remote cables/mounts in ORTF configuration using a small Vark bar. 

Not tippy, it's a 13 foot Impact stand with a wide footprint, I typically anchor the stand with tent stakes outdoors whether using the clamp or not for added stability.  The Rycote INV shock pictured works with this setup without a clamp which is the way I normally run it but I don't believe I posted a picture without the clamp.  The shock pictured is one of Rycote's INV-HG's but this works with their INV 7's too, just depends how heavy your mic configuration is.

At first, I thought there was a shure vertical mount, but it is just the top of the mic stand.  What are the advantages of this setup over a mounting shock mounts to a shure vertical bar?  Do you just leave your mics in ortf on the vark bar?

Would that Neumann Z26mt be strong enough to hold a large-ish bar with multiple microphones?

And on John's Rycote suggestion, would a 1/4" to 3/8" adapter work, so you can attach a standard female 3/8" thread? I am assuming there are such things?

The Rycote comes as standard with a female 3/8" standard thread - 1/4" doesn't come into it at all.

I think Rycote supplies a 3/8" to 5.8" adaptor as standard so you can fit it to stands with that horrible US thread (horrible because the 5/8" thread is so fine that it's easy to stick and bind).

I might be misunderstanding Rycote's specs, but as I read it they are saying:

"Male thread: 1/4" Whitworth
Female thread (brass): 3/8" UNC"

In other words, I am assuming that the male screw on top of the Rycote is 1/4" and the bottom/female is 3/8". So it will certainly fit on top of a standard stand with a 3/8" male thread, but the T-bar that needs to fit onto the Rycote has a 3/8" female thread, while the Rycote apparently has a 1/4" male thread. Hence my question about fitting a bar onto it with a 3/8" female attachment.

My DR-100mkii has a female 1/4" thread on the bottom, and since this Rycote is designed to fit a recorder like that on top of, for example, a boom pole, it makes sense that the male screw on top of the Rycote is 1/4".

That's correct Christine.  It's a 1/4"-20 male thread on top, the camera-mount standard which recorders have adopted as well.

And yes female 1/4" to male 3/8" adapters exists, will fit and should work.  The adapter will lift the attachment point by the height of the adapter, so the red rubberized upper surface of the Rycote PRS will no longer contact whatever you screw the adapter into.

Whitworth and UNC are two different standards and for the most part, are not compatable. When I worked in an auto shop I hated seeing British cars come in as they were the only time I encountered Whitworth threading as all my tools were not a good match. Some could be used but they weren't a proper fit. See Wikipedia's British Standard Whitworth page and the "see also" section for more specifics of other thread standards.

However, UNC 1/4-20 is compatible with 1/4" Whitworth in this case.

It works nicely. It's actually supposed to be heavy duty enough to support a portable recorder with built in mics.
