Inexpensive lp storage solution
« on: March 15, 2009, 05:05:34 PM »
Hey guys, I stumbled on these last night and thought I'd share. We don't have an Ikea in Colorado so the storage shelves I was looking at (expedit) would have to be shipped which would nearly double the price to close to $300. On a whim I headed up to a Super Target near my house last night and came upon these. They are $40, look good, hold about 150 lps in each, easy to put together and feel sturdy. Highly recommended

I’ve had a few weird experiences and a few close brushes with total weirdness of one sort or another, but nothing that’s really freaked me out or made me feel too awful about it. - Jerry Garcia

That looks a lot like a bookshelf that I'm using for LP storage. I eventually had to put a couple of wooden braces across the back. The shelf itself is sturdy, but the cheap cardboard back could not handle the weight of LP's pressing against it.

I'm using one of these but laying on its side instead of standing up.  At $90 its a pretty good value to hold a shit ton of records

A couple of weeks ago, I heard a loud crash in the back bedroom. I went back, and the old shelf in the closet had collapsed, and the clothes and everything stored were on the floor (the LP's were not amongst this mess).
So I was motivated to rebuild the shelf, and used it as an opportunity to build a heavy use / LP storage shelf.
From about two weeks ago;

$30 sheet 3/4" ply (finish-1side) cut by Lowes (this service basically equals nearly free lumber, as compared to the time to set up ripping a piece of plywood)
$5 for some 1x2
$40 plastic lp index cards, alum. channel, sundries
So, for about $75 I got 8' of storage (about 7/8+ full)
