Decent headphone amp?
« on: March 13, 2007, 03:43:19 PM »
Just got a set of AKG k701 and i'd like to know if there's an affordable, decent, small amp for headphones anyone could recommend me... I paid a lot for the headphones alone, so mind that i'm financially ruined ;D

Not sure, check out head-fi.org.  Based on what I'vem read though, those K701's need a lot of power to be driven well.

Lots of good choices between $300 - $700... starting with a Ray Samuel Hornet, Heed Canamp, Doge 6210 or WooAudio 3.. any of those will make the K701 sing... Under $100 - think Meier Porta, Go Vibe, Little Dot Micro

Good cans deserve (and need) good power

For about $200, you can get the Little Dot II++, a well rated tube amp. Excellent detail and sound. Will drive your K701 very well.
Probably the best bargain in the price range. You can easily google it and the maker also sells it on ebay which is very easy to purchase without bidding. His name is David and is a nice guy. He answers your questions if you have any. It's great bargain actually.

He also has a message board at little-tube.com

I am trying to get rid of a nice little starter amp.  A few months ago I was in the same place you are.  Got some good headphones, need an amp, but didn't have lots of cash to throw around.  I used this amp with sennheiser hd600's and it powered them just fine.

After using this amp for a while I knew what I wanted out of an amp.  For a while I was unsure if being portable was important.  Now I know being tied down is not for me.  I think you should buy an inexpensive starter amp, do some research at head-fi, save some cash, then upgrade when you know exactly what you want.  You can have this amp for 90$ shipped.  Good luck with you search.
