Rio Karma
« on: April 16, 2004, 12:22:26 PM »
Bought a Rio Karma the other day solely b/c of the flac support, and so far, I'm very impressed w/ it.  It supports gapless playback, which is pretty unique (I think very few players support gapless).  It doesn't have any inputs, so you can't record to it, but if you are looking for a neat way to carry 20gig of flac files around to playback, it's a hell of a deal.

gapless playback is a great feature...that's my only complaint about my Ipod.  (flac support would be great, but is not that big of a deal, considering i'm listening on low-quality headphones at the gym or through my shitty thing at work).

Is it USB only or does it support firewire?

Moving large files over USB is a bitch

I agree w/ ya Damon on the quality of the headphones, but the kicker for me is that I have next to nothing in MP3 or WMA format, and I don't really care to convert a bunch of stuff.  I have 70gig or more of stuff in flac already, which made it very appealing to me.  Just grab 20gig at a time and hit the road.

As for transfering to it...yeah Trey, it is very easy.  The Music Manager software that comes w/ it is your typical media database...lets you edit tags, view and search by title, album, artist, year, etc.  Moving files to the player is a matter of drag and drop or select>rt click>send to karma.  It has USB2 and ethernet that you can transfer across.  USB 2 is capable of 480Mbits/second which is really a little faster than the current implementation of firewire which is about 400.

The Rio DJ feature is kinda neat too...it's an auto playlist generator w/ multiple options, etc.....check this review, it explains a lot
