looking for suggestions (bass content)
« on: April 06, 2008, 12:40:47 PM »
So in two consecutive days i recorded big PA's with electric bass.  both times i got blown out of the room by bass.  These were my first times to record an electric bass with PA with the 414's.  Both times i ran xy (card then hyper), center stage, 8 ft up.  is the pattern picking up too much bass or is the stand too low?  should i be running a roll off on the mics?

i get out to record larger concerts rarely and electric basses even more rarely.  but it sucks to have to process a recording to make it listenable.

thanks for any help.

first of all don't run your 414s XY... try DIN or NOS for cards or hypers
you could also try Blumlein since the figure 8s seem to have a natural bass roll off
as you mentioned your stand may be too low
or you could roll off on the 414s at 40 Hz that would help also

you never run them XY?

it was too chatty for blumlein.

could i determine if my stand was too low other than running it higher?

I never have wanted that narrow of a stereo image to run XY
I know what you mean about Blumlein... chatty crowds ruin good shows
lately I have been trying M/S but you still have that heavy bass issue
I am thinking about running roll off or hyper on the Mid channel

I think raising your stand and possibly running the roll off are your best bets

I am not sure I agree with that advice.  DIN, NOS or any near-coincident technique will have more bass then XY.   Additionally it is a good idea to run LDC coincindently in any pattern.  There are several threads discussing this....

i run mostly xy, blumlein when the situation allows  but have made some nice sounding recordings with subcard NOS.  havent tried out din yet with LDCs, but may give it a try just to hear.

what he said

I loved my u89s in subs/nos and card/din but coincident is indispensable imho. As far as narrow stereo image - run them wide, 110
I’ve had a few weird experiences and a few close brushes with total weirdness of one sort or another, but nothing that’s really freaked me out or made me feel too awful about it. - Jerry Garcia

well, the roll off at 40hz helped combat the problem.  what am i sacrificing by doing this?  would it be better to do it in post?
thanks

When I had 414s, I almost always used a HPF during post editing.  Except for NOS sub-card, or split configs. on stage, I generally preferred the LD sound when run coincident vs. near-coincident (specifically m/s  ;D )

M/S & Blumlein rocks
but with CARDS I prefer separating the capsules (DIN)
and of course for SUBS (NOS)
as always... it's a matter of personal taste
