DPA 4061 / SP-CMC-8 directly into R-09?
« on: May 26, 2008, 09:46:29 AM »
Very simple question, though perhaps overly broad...

For a band like Yes (set varying from acoustic guitar solos to medium-volume amplified to loud/boomy bass pedals) would I be able to get away with DPA 4061 and/or SP-CMC-8 (AT943) directly into R-09?  I am trying to minimize my gear load, but I won't do it if it will significantly compromise the result.  Venues: Mostly outdoor sheds, some indoor 3-5,000 seaters, handful arenas.   P.S. I have proper connections for 4061.
Mics: Schoeps MK4, DPA 4061, AT953, Shure MV88
Preamps/BB: Nbox, tinybox, ST-9100, CA-UGLY, SP-SPSB-10
Recorders: In use--Teenage Engineering TX6, Tascam DR-2d, Sony PCM-A10, Zoom L-20R; collecting dust--Sony M10, Ediirol R-09, Zoom H4n, Zoom H6, Cymatic LR16
Video: In use--Panasonic VX981, Panasonic ZS100, GoPro Hero 10/11; collecting dust--Sony HDR-CX520V, Sony HX9V, Panasonic ZS3/ZS7

I had 4061's and used them with a battery box and was unable to get enough gain from the R-09 for a rock concert. I ended up getting the 9100 and that solved everything.

I'm not sure if the R-09 can properly power the AT943's.  I always use a battery box or the 9100 when running mine.  Security should be light for a band like Yes, bring in what you can.

I would recommend using a battery box. I have an R-09 and SP-CMC-8's (Low sensitivity modded). Recently taped Blaze Bayley (very loud) using this rig and it came out well. There were some quieter/semi acoustic sections in the recording, probably similar to the kind of sound levels you would expect with a band like Yes, and they sounded really sweet. I have never taped a gig with the mic's plugged directly into the R-09 so I can't say whether or not you would get away with this, personally I would not risk it. Nothing worse than getting home, listening to a disappointing tape and wishing you'd done things differently.

Please let us know what you decide and how it goes. I would be interested to hear about your results if you did record without the battery box or amp.

Use a battery box, otherwise you're asking for problems.

There is not enough battery voltage to run your mics into the R-09. The voltage is 3.9 volts the dpa needs to see 5 volts the AT will work at 3.9 but at a decreased max spl I might be able to mod the 943 so it would work with your r09 directly but that will reduce the sensitivity of the mic and cause you to use more gain this "might" not be an issue in loud shows but it would be an issue in quieter ones.

Okay, I will use a battery box.  The SP-SPSB-10 I have is fairly stealthy.  Chris, at some point I am going to look into your CA-UGLY (are you still calling it that? LOL).  Anyone here have experience with that preamp?

Thanks guys, +Ts all around...

I'm not so much worried about security, as I am about sweating all over my concealed gear... as I will be taping in outdoor venues in FL and TX in August!!    :)

Also, since I'll just be wearing a tank top and shorts, that reduces the available stowing places...

I'd also like to know about the preamp as well. I'm using an SP-SB-3 which is great for stealth but I'm wondering if the preamp will help the quality of the recordings at all when I can "pack" a bit more geatr.

+Ts in advance!

With the gear we have these days, especially something as small as the R-09, 007 work should be no issue.  I use to stealth a shoe box recorder + 3 tapes + batteries. Ah those were the days.

LMAO.   WM-D6 or D3 anybody?  With 3 or 4 C-100s, and a bunch of AA batteries.  I remember those days.  Then there was the brick known as the D7/D8 which made it a little smaller but was still heavy.

The R-09 is as light as a feather.

Hold on there!  Yes, DPA need more volts.  However, AT853 and family will run quite well from Edirol Plug-in-power.  If you use a 4.7k or 2.2k mod, and run straight into the Edirol, AT853, AT822, Sennheiser KE4, Sennheiser MKE2, and Church mics will all work great.  Getting things to work on Minidisc plug-in-power is harder.  I've experienced overloads in many cases.

Yeah, but it is easier for girls to stealth.  Security doesn't expect them to be taper geeks, lol.

Very much so - my ex used to take my gear to every show she went to on her own when we were dating.

Might be silly question but I prefer to be sure. All that SP-SPSB-X battery boxes are also preamps but without any flexibility left for user, right?
