Shut Down by Sister Hazel tonight... - oh fucking christ.
« on: July 03, 2004, 10:21:17 PM »
I'm way too lazy to copy and paste right now.

FWIW - SH has one of THE MOST OPEN taping policies.. until tonight.

http://allthings.sisterhazel.com/viewtopic.php?p=31855#31855 for the post on their board.

just kinda jaded about seein them ever again at this point. I could give a rip about their new songs... their live CD they released was really horrible sounding. I bought it and was like "what the fuck."

They were nice about it, and I know em, but.. yeah. it's just a slap in my face. They knew I was taping tonight - in the preparty application, I even said "And I can't wait to tape".

taperkat;

dude, don't be down on the situation. it was their wishes so you should respect that. i'm sure there will be plenty more opportunities to tape them.

if you still love the band, then keep supporting them.

Bummer, hopefully they'll change their minds for the future gigs and this was just sort of a one time thing.   They don't make it out to my neck of the woods often...the last time in town was during Finals week and I had an evening Final so I missed them :(  But it was long before I was into taping.

Ideally they should have put something on their website ahead of time to notify people they weren't going to allow taping at this upcoming gig(s) but it seems often us tapers make up such a small % of their fanbase we are an afterthought when it comes to that sorta thing.

I dunno, I think I'd be much more pissed if it was an issue where they didn't inform the venue they allowed taping and I wasn't able to tape....which has happened several times to me.   If it comes directly from the band then I'd be more willing to accept it and be less angry.

Venue made me sign a release. in fact, house of blues actually didn't do anything wrong...

and people have been taping the other shows this run, just not "this one". Just a case of bad timing I guess.. but.

the shitty part of really all of it is I *have* a show I taped and that they don't want circulated, so I've planned to never convert it.

it's just a really confusing situation. And no, no one can really understand why I didn't stay for the show, but I guess it's because I was looking *so much* to it, it really deflated my sails. And as i said in the other thread, I understand that trust is earned, and maybe hopefully this is a step in the right direction.

confusing because, well, quite frankly, there isn't many more bands with a more lenient taper policy THAN sh.

understood completely.  honestly after you deal with situations like that you are too mentally pent up to want to stay around and watch the show

Yes...and instead of enjoying the show, you might just find yourself getting angry...and that's not a good thing. And I'd still be suspicious that there wasn't some HOB cahootenizing in the background.

Yeah. Just.. bleh. I revised my post on their board too, didn't feel like dealing with people who definitely won't understand. I tried, that's about the end of it.

That really sucks. I kind of feel the same way with the upcoming Guster run. I love to tape them, not my favorite band but their shows are a blast. And all of a sudden becuase of the people they tour with no open taping...not cool not cool at all. It stinks when you get shut down like this. Sorry you had that experience, but keep supporting whoo you like.

yeah, I did. I was trying to remember the last time I actually *stand* taped.. it's gotta be prior to October of last year. And even that, I'm guessing sometimes over a year ago, if not more.

I honestly can't remember. The last show I *know* I stand taped was 11.01 Virginia Coalition here in Wilmington... beyond that, it gets a bit fuzzy.

update on the setlist..

how many new songs did they play tonight?

ONE.

And guess what?

It's already been leaked to the internet prior to tonight.

.... That is ... just astounding. I wasn't allowed to tape because they played one new song that's already been taped and out there.

 :P

[my note: that's also the only song that they played tonight that I've never seen live, with the exception of a couple songs being acoustic instead of electric.]

I read that forum link you supplied, apparently they don't get it.  Personally, if i attended a show for a band that was very open taping and someone from their crew shut me down i'd be pissed, they should do their part and and put up a notification on their site prior to the day of the show.  Sure, you could still stay at the show, but if your main reason for going was to tape, then i can understand how it ruined your night.

Not to be a dick, but always remember, taping is a privilege, not a right. No matter how long you've been taping or supporting a band. I know you edited your original post, but saying that you could have taped the show and spread it would not help you any.

i see it the other way - mainly because, well, it's the truth. And I didn't do that, though I know i could.

ultimately, it is just stupid because these days, it's my opinion if you don't want anything released on the internet or whatever, don't play em where more than just ears could be listening.

No. I never think taping is a right.

My point through the entire thing is that it's ridiculous to think that if you're playing new songs, they won't be released on the internet.

Everything they played last night i found on WinMX this morning. (and, imo, pretty nasty quality).

And, the other thing, is that the band has ALWAYS had one of the most free and open taping policies, and this is the actual first Sister Hazel show I've ever heard of that the band has said "you may not tape". It's an oddity in that sense.

I know *why* they did it, but i mean, christ, I signed a release for HOB twice (once for audio, once for specific media aka dat) and still was told no.. that's just nuts.

and, like i said - I am more of a stealth than a non stealth taper (i hate lugging my stand around), so theoretically I could have still stayed, and broken the wishes of the band, but i respect them enough to not do that.

I understand where your coming from.  If the band is worried that the songs are going to leak they probably are anyway.  Or if the band is going to suck while trying to play new songs they probably shouldn't play them then.  There is no reason they should have turned you down after you have taped so many times unless they were ashamed how their performance is going to be.
