Will this rig work?
« on: July 26, 2005, 06:06:08 PM »
Very excited about taping Habmx for the first tome, or anything for that matter, before i go out and purchase all this equipment, i wanna know if this should work.

Akgc1000>tascam us122>sonyMD

If this will work will i be able to connected the "chain" from the tascam 122 to the MD rec via USB because the MD model i want to buy only has a usb port and not any other input. also should the sony MD rec power my tascam 122 through the usb?  GODSPEED

you can go AKG C1000s -> MD (or jb3)   Just use 9v batteries inside the c1000s.  You'll probably want some line transformers to boost the signal, but you can then go line-in on the recorder.  My first rig was c1000s->line transformers -> Sony TCD D7

can you use line transformers with any mic?  I'm still really new to al this and I'm looking for a litle CHEAP gain.  could this be the answer?  Sorry for the thread hijack

id recomend getting xlr>xlr line transformers, those would work great for your rig :)

I use the line transformers now with my deneke ps2, which provides phantom power, but is not a mic preamp.  The line transformers boost the output levels to more match a line level input.  THe c1000s are nice, as they don't require phantom power, but rather can be powered by the internal 9v batteries.  Most other inexspensive mics that are used for recording (octavas, pulusos, Studio Projects, etc) require phantom power.  The line tranformers do not provide this.

but phantom power has MANY pros IMO, id go w/ the ps2 to compliment them , so they can get much better dynamic range

sweet this may solidify my rig till I can afford a UA5 (fall/winter)

oktava mk012-->ART phantom 2-->line transformers-->JB3

Right now I'm using a spsb1 and can't get up to line level on the jb3.  I always have to crank the gain and if I'm not recording in a small, loud room it sounds poopy.

+T for the tip Bean...  how much does something like that cost?

The Line transformers run as little as $12-$25   You'll want either the HOSA MIT-176 or the Audio Technica CP8201.  I have the audio technica's FWIW (they came with the c1000s when I bought them from another taper).  These terminate in 1/4" though.  I'm not sure of the XLR-XLR ones.

would this work??

http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&product%5Fid=274-016

It looks pretty similar to the audio technica ones that I have.  Description sounds right too

I dunno man, im not 100sure, and wouldnt you rather go xlr>xlr, ori guess either way, youre gonna have to get something, like a y-adapter to connect either xlr>1/8" for the jb3 input OR a y-adapter w/ 1/4">1/8" for the jb3 end!

if you're going straight into the jb3, you'll want to end with a 1/8" stereo.  I've got a 1/4" female to 1/8" stereo cable that I use.  The audio technica's actually come apart (1 screw) and I've contemplated making my own interconnects that go XLR line transformer -> RCA to go into the sbm-1.  You could also make it 1/8"    If you can find, and buy xlr-xlr line transformers, they'll more than likely be more expensive, and then you still need to go from the xlr-1/8"   I'd skip that step if possible.  XLR connectors aren't that cheap.

I think I'm gonna hit the rat shack in the morning.  After work I'll tape off the stereo and do a head to head with and without.  for $30.00 why not?  I'll keep you posted
