Title: Powering the SD MixPre-D

I recently bought the Sound Devices MixPre-D mic pre and like it a lot for most of its functionality. The main issue for me is running out of power. Because of the 48V phantom need, I'm only getting about 1.5 hours of time from the internal two AA batteries. Does anyone have a serious solution to this via a tidy rechargeable, cost-effective, beefy battery pack? I need at least 4-5 hours of record time. Thanks

Tekkeon MP3450 or go old school with Sony/Sanyo etc. NP1 type batteries that can be found used for less $$$

Thanks for this recommendation DigiGal. The 3450 has been on my radar but I've been concerned about quality and durability issues after reading the Amazon owner's critical reviews for this Tekkeon piece. While general reviews like those leave one wondering, I do see several members here who use the 3450, so perhaps more light can be shed on those worries. Can a bullet-proof alternative be suggested? Also, a connecting cable between the battery and MixPre-D needs a Hirose termination at the preamp end; a recommendation on that would be appreciated also. Thanks again.

Any lithium that puts out 10-17V should be fine. Either tgakidis or darktrain can make a Hirose cable for you. I got mine from tgakidis, and it's a hot swap dual cable. Works great!

Assuming that I can get the proper Hirose-tipped cable run made, does anyone know the reliability, etc., of this bx948 unit? Compatibility with the MixPre-D is crucial, particularly including the demands of 48V phantom operation and with LED meters well illuminated.

Seems a lil expensive for such a small battery. But if it works like you need it to, then go for it ;)

This is a 9v battery and you need at least 10v. The Bixnet BP-90 (http://www.bixnet.com/exnobapo80.html) would work for you needs, if you're attached to this manufacturer for any specific reasons.

A good battery is not cheap, especially of the 12v variety. If you have the money to spend I would recommend the Battery Geeks 10-14-115 (http://www.thebatterygeeks.com/Portable-DVD-Player-Battery-p/10-14-115.html), however it will likely have more capacity than you actually need.

Don't worry about the battery 'meeting the demands' of 48v and LED Meters. Any battery that can meet the required voltage and output amperage will work the same*.

*Ignoring possible switching noise

I was thinking about starting a new thread until I found this one. I am not sure what type batteries Rudyts used but I ran a test with Energizer Ultimate Lithium and got real close to 6 hours and 45 minutes using my mics with P48 on.My mics draw 4.5 mA.

My mics draw a little more, 5.2 mA total and I also tested over 6 hours with P48, the meter lights on lowest brightness hitting around +12, running the gain around 8:00 and going XLR out to my deck. I'm too tied to the reliability to go to rechargeable, maybe one day...

have you tried out nimh rechargeable aa batteries?  Looks like the energizer lithiums are 2900 mah -- you can get rechargeables nimh batteries with close to the same capacity.  Issue would be whether the mix pre-d is designed to work with the lower voltage that a nimh puts out (1.2 volts vs. 1.5 volts for a standard nimh) -- worth trying out to see
