Take a di and a mic and borrow a nice compressor for both channels.
Pockets full of nickels and nothing left to eat, and I'm stuck behind a semi on Soniat Street.

A DI (some amps have them built in) is just a way to sent the instrument signal into your microphone input (they're different levels). If you can't get a compressor I wouldn't worry about it unless the guy is playing an exceptionally nice bass. And I'd also consider keeping the mic (or mic's) farther away from the amp w/o compression.
