Where's the best place to buy these? Ebay? Need to grab two more, just not sure what brand is best which place sells them the cheapest. I got one on ebay a while back and it turned out to be a dud. Are there brands I should stay away from or are they all basically the same with different packaging?
-
My theory is that if a company is going to sell ripoff fakes, they will stamp them sony. So I'd lean toward buying non-sony batteries from a known 3rd party brand. But I haven't bought any in years so no recs.

I've had good experiences with these folks :)
YMMV

I have a few of these 6900 mAh batteries. No problems whatsoever. For the price they're damn easy to replace if they'd ever need it.

+ Mythical T's all around.

I have been getting mine from 1800-emart.com they have the problem on the case coming apart like most generics but a bead of CA/Suprt glue fixes the problem

these are the only ones I use. You dont have to worry about the pins coming out with these batteries either.

I bought a couple of these once...
The batteries charge/discharge fine, but I found that they don't seat all the way in my 702 recorder. Maybe it was just my unit? When you slide the battery into place, the locking tab did not have enough clearance to pop up. So you could slide the battery out without pushing down the locking tab...
not good.

martin, does that one lock on well? If ordered the 6900 battery from the cheapest of the Amazon links and received a 5400 battery. They said that is as big as they can get. It locks on pretty solid.

I do not have one of those specifically, but Cfox uses them and has no issues at all. I didn't learn about these until after I bought a few from B&H. I use the Impacts (NP-F975) from B&H still. When they bite the dust I plan to replace them with these Lenmars though.

I have this battery, and I run HDD and CF all nite with the lights on, and still have enough power to run a latenite if needed. And the pins don't come out the batts either. I wouldn't feel comfortable with anything under 7600

I bought a couple of these once, from "Red Hot Buys", who was selling them for like $20 each.

The battery housing on these generics must be just a tad bigger than the original or something.
Like I said, they work fine, but I wouldn't trust that situation in the field.
Sorry to hear that. I went back and looked at each of my batteries and they all seat in the battery slot perfectly. No overlap or obstruction. Happy customer here but I guess with most things YMMV.

FWIW forumssounddevices.org has a running thread on batts and cards. I find it easy to go there to see what other folks have found.

Neither thread on the SD forum is current anyways. Much more real world discussion here on ts.com over the years about batteries and media than on the SD forums for sure.

What's the consensus on the best charger? By best I mean quicker than the 722 and gives it a full charge.

FYI, I bought this battery last May, ran it for 7-8 shows and always had plenty of power. Started the night last night with 8v after a 24 hour charge and the battery died an hour into the show.
Going to try and send it back to Thomas Distributors to get a new one. Fingers Crossed.

Hey Bean, can you measure how tall that battery is? I have the Lenmar listed above but need something that will at least give me 4 hours of recording but has to be shorter than the Lenmar-lis970. I may take that off your hands if the price is right.

don't think he will be responding anytime soon

Hmmm, is there a reason? He's been on the boards :-\
-
any way to discharge these batteries other than just running till dead?
i picked up a couple of generics from ebay and i they have the problem that was mentioned earlier about not locking in place. never been a real problem, but i do not trust them out in the dessert for the festival 8.
i think i am going to get a couple of new ones - any current suggestions?
**edit to add** eek... around $70 a pop... maybe i need to just bust out the dremel and shave a millimeter or two off the back... is this safe ??? i figure i would just thin it a tad so the pin comes up and locks in.

Check out the Lenmar battery above as they have better than average quality control on their batteries. The LIS970P is the big daddy at 7800mAh. $51 and free shipping to boot. Such a damn good deal i'm buying one myself right now.
-

Uh oh, that's not good...
Anyway, I strongly recommend the Sony batteries as the quality is guaranteed. With all lights turned off and phantom 48V turned on (to a pair of schoeps ccm4), I got 14 hours with the npf970 (6600mAh) and 8.5 hours with the npf770 (4400mAh). You can't beat that kind of battery life. I would estimate even the small npf570 (2200mAh) which barely sticks out (I think) should last over 4 hours with phantom on based on the other two. They cost more but definitely worth it IMO.

thanks Dave. for that price, i couldn't pass one up. actually had bought 2 7200mAh generic ones off of Ebay and it didn't last. Not to mention one of the pins came out after the 2nd use. WTF. what a piece of crapola.

So how do you tell if they are going to fail early? They just don't hold a charge as long, or do they die without notice?
You've spooked me now. I've received one that was posted either here or over on the SD forums for $35 shipped (a 7600mah I think), and now I'm curious just how much I should monitor it or whatever. I'm coming off of nimh batteries which I didn't have issues with (that weren't due to other environmental reasons) and I'm mildly worried now.
-
if you stick with the lenmar brand you shouldn't have to worry one bit about power.
-

I bought a few generic batteries off of Ebay a while back, some will power my 722 for 6+ hours yet and some go dead in under an hour. Every six months or so I run a test on them and mark the run-time on the side of the battery. Once they get too weak to run a complete show, they go for recycling and get replaced with a lenmar 7800.
I have never had one just fail, it seems as though they only loose capacity over time.
-

Ah, excellent. I understand anything can happen, but the information is comforting.
-
Glad I could help. For $50 it's a steal. Lenmar also has a 3 year warranty which the knock off batteries don't.
After I picked mine up last night there were 19 of them left and now there one. Good job ts.com

I scooped one of these a couple weeks ago. Haven't taken it out of the package yet though.
Can I just confirm this is the battery most recommend? It doesn't say it on the auction for some reason, but I believe it is 7800mAh correct?
Thanks.

Just wanted to update as I got my new battery today. Ordering and then the free shipping took a total of 7 days.
Pretty damn good for the price i'd say.
