6 volt sla charger question
« on: January 02, 2004, 12:36:33 AM »
I know this is the wrong fourm yada yada yada...

Im starting to look into ways of powering a DIMC-20, and Im looking at sla stuff, and the plug is $75. Now, Im no rocket scientist, but a plug for 75 bucks seems downright unbelaveable. http://www.sonicsense.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=SSI&Product_Code=66A&Category_Code=6V Is there any place that they are signifigantly cheaper? Could I make one? THANKS!

Eco-Charge 66-A 6 volt battery charger with carrying case.

that is a link to the ecocharger.

edit:  goto radioshack and get the $15 one.  i just modded mine tonight so it has a 4-pin instead of alligator clips.

i would never buy that one unless you are one of those guys who have $ to burn and just want to get the entire eco charge package.  they charge, what, $80 for a battery i can get for $15, stupid IMO.  just go down to radioshack and ask for the 6V SLA charger, it has the charge/trickle feature as well so you won't overcharge the SLA's.

THANK YOU! That was what I was wondering! Spending this much on power is KILLING me! Now 85 bucks for a battery and 30 for the cable to go from SLA > DIMC-20 :(

Lots of people read the power threads.  Just about every question that is posted to one of the Tech section forums get answered.  Not an abyss by any stretch.

At any rate, check out RS or your local electronics shop for chargers and SLAs.  They'll be much, much cheaper.  Just make sure the charger has an appropriate charge-rate for your SLA.  Check out the Powersonic sight for some guidelines on charge-rates applicable to different sized SLAs.

And no  need to get a charger with proper connectors, either - very easy to solder yourself.  There's plenty of info on this in the Archival Info section.  Check it out and if you still have questions, post away and we'll get you set up.

hey i have a 6V 5AH SLA and old shitty charger that i got in some gear swapping that you can have if you cover shipping.  the charger doesn't have the trickle feature so you might have to watch to pull the battery out when it's done.  never used the charger, it also has a 4-pin already on it.

Yes.  But trust me, it's easy.  I'm all thumbs and I can do it.  Just gotta make sure you get the polarity correct, which is very easy to verify with a multimeter.  If you wanna save the bucks, making your own is the only way to go, Alex - and it really is a breeze.

Nice offer by Chase!  May be a good start for you, but beware - I'll bet big bucks you'll overcharge the snot out of it soon enough without the float/trickle feature on the charger.

just PM me your address and i'll send it out, i forgot i even had it until i went digging through my closet tonight.  down the road you will probably want to spend the $15 and get the radioshack charger but this could hold you off for a while.

I am taking care of alex...I will get th3 charger today for him.  Do you guys know what the size of the plug for the dmic is since he doesn't have one?  I am going to Cedar Rapids on business later, might as well take a pit stop at 36 cents a mile ;)

very nice stuff, to say the least...im toomcu of a stoner to worry about pulingbatss...thats the LAST thing i wanna do!!! ;)

i can leave a batt on charge for 3 years if i want w/ no worry of overcharging/whatnot.....

As can I with my homebrew SLAs.

That said, I do think Ecocharge provides value:

[1] labor for those unwilling/able to do it themselves
[2] the circuitry to reduce waste in the 12V/6V combo harness

I happen to think learning to solder and create your own SLAs, cables, etc.  is a useful skill everyone should at least attempt and saves money taboot.

im toomcu of a stoner to worry about pulingbatss...

Obviously.  Your post speaks to that!  But Bean...think about how much more weed you could've bought and smoked with the money you saved by building your own SLA setups!

i know, im just weird about soldering any kind of actual power source!!plus, ive talked to a pretty respectable guy on this board, and he said his homemades have leaked in his bag, all over his shit, and thats w/ powersonics, sooo, THAT makes me nervous!!! :-\

i agree about saving money, but w/ the money we spend on gear, whats a few hundred bucks on quality equipment???ya know :D

while this thread is still active, i wanted to throw this out there:

i have 2 oade 3mah sla's. i use one to power sbm-1 and d8, and the other to power an mp-2. i have a cable with 2 sony size power couplings on one cable which i hooked up to one sla, and i have an mp-2 type connector hooked up to the other sla.

i was thinking of connecting both batteries together, and then making 1 cord out of the two to power all three devices.

any thoughs for or against this idea?

thanks
chris k

Why?  How do you feel this would improve your current setup, what benefits would this provide beyond your current arrangement?

while i have made my own, i still like the eco-design. if only they made larger capacities like 12ah for example, i would probably buy from them again. yet now, with a ua5 and a d8, i really have no use for my sla's and may be thinking about unloading my 3 batts and 2 chargers......

well, a regular charger wont float on these 12ah batts. thats why i had to buy the upgraded xenotronix chargers.
