Post by: stantheman1976 on April 27, 2008, 11:18:12 PM
I'm looking to replace the batteries in both units and need some advice on the best battery to get.  I'm using eBay.

http://www.pdainternalbattery.com/iriverinstall.html is what I followed, and it is right on the money for both units.

I bought the batteries on ebay for about $10 delivered from HK

Petur says THIS one is best: "CameronSino" brand

Just as a word of warning - I bought a 2200mAh battery for my H320 on Ebay, it was listed as a generic 1st/2nd Gen Ipod battery.

The battery is absolutely fine but is just slightly too big for the H320 - I've had to remove the blue rubber protective padding in order to make it fit - and even then it's still very tight in there. For my purposes, losing this padding isn't too much of a problem (I think) but other people might be using their recorders in situations that would make that protection crucial...

I'm told that the small capacity batteries do fit better, so it might be somehting else to bear in mind when making your choice.

100% correct

That is why I have been saying you should buy a battery marked for iriver h120/h140/h320/h340, and not a generic ipod one.
The CameronSino battery I have seems to be a bit thicker than the stock battery, but at the same time it is also a bit less wide, which makes it fit fine (there are some small notches on the sides in the back cover).

I first had an ipod battery, which indeed not only was a hard fit, but also inflated and started leaking.

Hmm... what sort of time delay was there between the fitting of the battery and the inflation/leakage starting?

Mine's been ok for around a month but it's only had a couple of charges in that time. I wonder if it might be safer to get that thing out of there and get a 'proper' replacement...

try this ebay link: http://tinyurl.com/69uobw

So this one has a connector already on it and once the case is opened it will just plug directly in like the old one?

BTW, what is the mAh of the stock battery?  If I buy that 2200mAh battery will it fit normally inside both units?

I think it started acting up after about 3 months, it happened during charging...

stock battery = 1700mAh

btw, the ebay item linked above has 2200mAh on the picture but 1700mAh in the text, so look out (it might just be 1700, pics are no guarantee). Also, it isn't a CameronSino one...

Oh dear. Thanks for that - I think I'll invest in one of the CameronSino ones and play it safe from now on.

It can very well be that your battery will never do this, I am not a battery expert, just posting what I've seen and heard. ymmv

So do these batteries listed on eBay have connectors on the ends so they just plug straight in?

depends, you will need to make sure the connector is in the correct way and polarity before connecting it

I bought this battery (that is my transaction) just recently.  On Saturday I installed it into a (new-to-me) H320. Everything fit well and installed fine. My only hitch was losing one of the motherboard screws under the motherboard (twice) and it was a b**ch to get out. Highly recommend tweezers for those screws on their way out and back in. Fired right up, good solid charge.

BTW, this was a best offer and I bid $15. Next time I will go a bit lower, as I am thinking about replacing a couple of others as well.

Thanks.  I just bought two.  I tried making an offer lower than $15 but it was not accepted.  Still, $30 for two reliable high capacity batteries is not bad at all.  Did it come with the tool to open the unit like it describes in the auction.  Where are they located?  Is there a connector on the battery?  Sorry to ask so many questions.  My irivers are two of my most important pieces of equipment and I want to take ad few risks with them as possible.

I bought one a few months back from the same seller and it does come with tools.  You get the torx screwdriver, and anohter plastic "wedge" tool to help you push apart the faceplate once it's unscrewed (to prevent prying on the thing)  There is a connector on the battery, no need to switch for polarity and there should be a little video showing you exactly how to do it.

Once you do the first one you'll be fine, i was nervous due to how much pressure i had to put on the connectors when pulling the original battery out, but it turned out fine.  good luck.

Thanks guys.  I see they are located in Brooklyn so hopefully they won't take long to get here.  Like I said, I just don't want to screw anything up.  My irivers are too valuable to me.  I use them both to record audio feeds from mics or a mixer for video work.  I'd be screwed if they got messed up.

What he said. Also pay attention to the orientation of the plug when you pull it out. I got it fine, but for a moment I couldn't recall which way it had come out. Probably only goes in one way, but given how small it is, didn't want to force it in the wrong orientation.

Mine came directly out of Hong Kong and took 7-10 days to arrive.  Not sure where it says Brooklyn....

Ok, I looked it up, and my PayPal had that address too, but it did ship out of Hong Kong.
