I just discovered that my Pioneer V710 (ya its a few years old) doesn't support 24/96...... this is going to be an issue since I just got a Microtrack recorder (ya I know it wont do digi 24/96... yet.. soon I hope!)..
Can anyone recomend one that will do 24/96 LPCM from DVD-A discs?
I need it to be reasonably priced, and also double as home theatre reciever (Dolby Dig, DTS, 5.1, etc..)... would like something w/atleast 100w per channel in 5.1 (not a necessity, but I crank the movies up!!).
New toys!!

I guess the other question is, is the DAC in any receiver going to be be noticably better than the DAC in your DVD player?
if not, you might as well save yourself the time and money and just run analog from your DVD player into your existing receiver.
or, I'm sure that Sony that Nick recommended would be good also :)

the DAC in the Sony ES recievers is better than any onboard DAC on any deck out there...w/o spending thousands.

That's a pretty damn bold statement bro :-X

if you dont like it, counter it with some good examples.

it is a bold statement.
but these Sony's fucking rock in the DAC department. its their strongest point..and if they had a clean PRE-OUT, i'd run one forever in front of some beefier amplification.
I've had the pleasure of listening to a lot of other gear ....using the digital inputs on the sony and either using its preamp output, or directly through the digital amp sounds realy good. it has weaknesses comparred to some other things, but where it was lean in one department, it tromped in another. And its alwasy been comparrisons with other setups that cost 4-6X as much as my 3000es did.
Its got the best resolution and detail out of everything i've heard...but thats my ears.
poor mans Meitner.

Anyone know if the STR-DA3/5000ES are capable of powering 4-ohm speakers, a la Maggies? The specs say 8-ohm, but...that doesn't necessarily mean they're not up to the task. Curious if anyone has experience running 4-ohm speakers on the 3/5000.

doug told me that he didnt really think the sony amps could handle 4 ohms, but he wasnt sure as he hadnt tried it.
why maggie goes at 4ohms is beyond me- makes buying an amp a real pain.

You should hear the modded panny ;) I have lots of suggestions, but are we just talking receivers or actual DAC's, because perhaps I misunderstood but I thought you were implying that the DAC's in the sony are as good a say an 900 dollar DAC, and I would call BS in that instance. If we are just talking internal DAC's on receivers, then I misunderstood.

ya, but would doing this sort of defeat the point of going all digital?
I mean, ya it'll work, but no digi... :(

I don't think you can do 5.1/DTS in analog, can you?

I don't think you can do 5.1/DTS in analog, can you?
you can do 5.1 (not sure about DTS) by using the multichannel outs on the DVD to multichannel ins on the receiver

doesn't this kind of defeat the purpose?
you are going digital on the disc > d/a on the DVD player > receiver a/d > receiver d/a > speakers
correct me if im off here.

it does, I was just pointing out it could be done

OK, I didn't know - I always figured it was in the digital realm only - at least that's how I've always connected.

fwiw if you listen to multi channel SACD, unfortunately this is how you have to send the audio since the DVD is blocked from sending a digi signal

I have the Sony STR-DA3000ES - I love it. I won't give it up until I get tubes (and I won't really give it up - just integrate it into the bedroom rig.)
That being said - I had never thought that much of Yamaha receivers until my friend auditioned his RX-V1500 - the unit really sounds nice. I prefer the Sony, but that Yamaha - not bad at all. Doug Oade has reported that the analog stage of the Sony x000es line is not so hot so the Yamaha may be a good solution if all of your connections are not digi-in...

I've been very happy with my Outlaw receiver (model 1050 now replaced by a newer model). I did not do any direct comps with other boxes, however. Only complaint now is I'm running out of digital inputs. It will take 24/96 in from the digital out on my m-audio soundcard. Also has the discrete 5.1 inputs. outlawaudio.com
