im looking into all my options here before i spend any more money
i ahve a set of 391s, and the lowest price i can find new hypers are 135 each from an online retailer
for what i will be recording this last part of summer and fall i will definantly be wanting a set of hypers, and would love to do some experiments with some omnis
il be running everything into a warm mod ua5
just looking for some opinions, as a set of mc012s with matched sets of all 3 caps can be had new for 659 online and il have more in my 391s by adding hypers with the added bonus of omnis
and advice or some samples of any of the matched mc012s sources, especially with a ua5 would be greatly appreciated
i do have high speed if i can d/load some samples

So I am sure you are going to get some dissenting opinions around here, but in my opinion, the 391s beat the Oktavas in every circumstance I have heard them. Now keep in mind that I run them into MP2->Mod SBM1 and thereby am not doing a direct comparison to the UA-5 type tapes. But my experience with the Oktava tapes (and yes I have heard many of them since there are quite a few Oktava tapers on the DMB circuit) is that they are more susceptible to a very non-defined presence in the low end...I would not say sloppy as most would, but non-defined.
On the flip side I can tell you that I made some great 391 tapes before I decided to get the hyper caps and in all honesty, the hyper caps are better than the card caps...sweet sweet sound.

one more ?
what will the warm mod ua5 do to the low end of the octavas?

You can get a factory matched set of Oktavas (with the card caps) for $249 and then buy the other caps separately. It should be far less then $659.
That is if you have a Guitar Center near by, or know someone that does.

Though that price might be only good until the end of the month. But I wouldn't expect it to go much higher

if you need a user/pass its: cool/deals
Mbox looks like a nice deal too.

wow that's a deal. Since when are they factory matching them? I thought Oktava had no quality control on their mics. I bought mine w/ card caps from recordingservices.net ken hand matches them, but they were $260+shipping.
love em. I'm not gonna be upgrading mics for quite some time.
